Are Filipinos Happier than Other Groups of People?

While I can’t speak for other countries, we Filipinos appreciate and find delight in the smallest things in life. Life in the Philippines isn’t easy, but it’s easy to be happy here. Let me explain.

We are a developing nation, with nearly a fifth of the population living under the poverty line. Wages are much lower compared to first world nations, although thankfully, so is the cost of living. Being very close to the pacific ocean, we are prone to typhoons and other natural calamities.

But the beautiful thing is that, in my opinion, people here value family and community, nearly to a fault. We like being around other people, joking with one another, and talking with each other. We like making small talk, and we like having meaningful conversations as well.

None of this is clearer when we celebrate our town fiestas. Filipino families have an open door policy, where friends, relatives, and friends of friends can come in and partake in the feast. Often people would hop from one house to another, or end up dancing at the community disco.

Family is everything in the Philippines, and we support each other through difficult times. Here, you are never alone. If you experience heartbreak, financial difficulties, or lose your home in a fire, there is always family, or friends, you can turn to.

Filipino humor is at the heart of Filipino communities.

Outsiders might find it hard to understand our sense of humor. More often than not, you’ll hear us make light of our own tragedies or laugh at events that are familiar to us. Others may find this offensive or strange, but it is how we deal with hardship.

One can see this in the children playing on the street, laughing and smiling. They may not have full bellies, or clean clothes. But they are having the time of their lives.

The Philippines has suffered so many natural disasters over the decades. We take storms and floods during the wet season like they don’t bother us (but they do). This has caused hardship for many Filipinos, particularly those living in rural, less developed areas. Yet we don’t dwell on the sadness for long.

In times like those, we learned that it’s more productive to pick ourselves up than stay down. So in order to help brighten things up, we turn to humor.

But despite the occasional disaster, our climate is a major factor for happiness. The weather is even-tempered throughout most of the year, and we don’t experience extremes in temperature. It is mostly sunny—characteristic of a tropical climate. This means “happy” weather for most of the year.

We have beaches and mountains, and these provide vibrant escapes from the drudgery of daily living.

Lastly, whether you agree with this or not, our faith is a major reason why we Filipinos remain a hopeful people.

So in summary, the Philippines lacks many things that make other nations powerful, economically strong, and influential. But our greatest resource always has been, and continues to be our people. We are friendly, hospitable, resilient, family oriented, and funny. So it makes sense that there is a lot of happiness to go around the Philippines.
