“I pray this year will find all well. I may not be here next year.”

Tuesday, January 1, 1991

Clear. Bright. 37 degrees. I pray this year will find all well. I may not be here next year. I try my best. My sister called. She is alone too. Not adjusted yet to her husband’s death. Takes years and you never really get over it. I miss D. too a lot. T. called. Ate pork for the New Year. Watched TV.

Thursday, January 3, 1991

43 degrees. Chilly. Partly clear. Went to Acme. S. went to the hospital to get her nose set and stitched again. She was home by 10:30. The lady pastor from church brought church bulletins for S. to type. Pink sunset.

Saturday, January 5, 1991

38 degrees. Dampish. J&P came. Went out to lunch. M. went too. S. didn’t go because of the bandage on her nose. S. ran copies of the bulletins at church. M. helped her. She is doing it while the man who usually does it is in Florida. TV. Bed.

Sunday, January 6, 1991

34 degrees, up to 40. Cloudy early. Chilly and damp. Went to church. S. went too. Her nose feels better. The bulletins look nice. She got compliments for the printing. No one came to visit. T. called. I called R. They had gone to Virginia to take B.’s sister back.

Monday, January 7, 1991

34 degrees. Snow! About 4 inches. Didn’t take car to garage for new muffler. Everything is closed so far. Got the driveways cleared at 7 p.m. But they didn’t clear in front of the garage doors.

Wednesday, January 9, 1991

Icy on driveway. KK stayed with S. last night. She got out after a while to go to work. I didn’t get my hair done. By afternoon, the driveway was clear.

I had to have my nose re-broken and re-set surgically. Wasn’t a big deal, but I hated going out in public with the big bandage on it. (I was a vain 21-year- old). I remember my volunteer job typing the church bulletins each week, then running to the church to make copies before the service Sunday. I didn’t mind it, at least while college was on break. One problem we kept facing after my dad was gone was keeping the driveways open after snow and ice storms. He would either shovel or hire someone when he was alive. Now, my mom and grandmother had to pool their resources and figure out who to hire, decide who was reliable enough to show up consistently. It was a never-ending battle, with our steep driveways.

Not our church…but close!
