To the one who walks among the stars- Do you fill space like you fill my heart? To the one who lifts our faces, Who made the cosmic voices deep, Of whom one deep to another calls, And says, Who is he that fills the void Between your brow and mine? Who sets the stars upon the crown Of midnight space, the moving bind?
I heard the stars in passing, Saying, Let us grace that mighty head, dear friends, The light wherewith we’ve been endowed A jeweled web, The woven fray, Before the highest, bowed As he lit each pin of light to stay Amongst the bright-fired, constellating crowd.
But look! High within the celestial awning The mighty moved a matter small, And pressed anew an azure ball… His opus in an earth was dawning Of all the worlds and worlds of worlds, ‘Twas here, this tiny corner far One measure more, his heart unfurled To bring the small things where the big things are.
Now look again! Here comes Jacob’s Ladder Close he treads, Earthbound feet and star-clad head Behold, the heaven-seated matter Not content to stand afar, Looking at us through the stars One measure more, his blood he shed To bring the small things where the big things are…
