Platform Engineering is not about platforms.

Over the last few years, I’ve noticed that Platform Engineering is often reduced to internal developer portals, Kubernetes platforms, or automation pipelines.

Those are certainly important — but they’re only part of the story.

For me, Platform Engineering is about engineering enablement.

It’s about creating an ecosystem where engineering teams can consistently build secure, scalable, and maintainable software without reinventing the wheel for every project.

That ecosystem includes:

• Reference architectures
• Engineering standards
• Architectural guardrails
• Reusable integration patterns
• Secure default configurations
• AI-assisted engineering workflows
• Developer self-service capabilities
• Governance that enables delivery instead of slowing it down

When these capabilities come together, something interesting happens.

Teams spend less time debating technology choices and more time solving business problems.

• Developers become more productive.
• Architecture becomes more consistent.
• Security becomes proactive rather than reactive.

..and organisations deliver software faster — with higher quality.

Over the course of my career, I’ve found that some of the most valuable architectural work isn’t designing a single application.

It’s building the platforms, practices, and engineering capabilities that enable hundreds of applications to be built better.

That’s the aspect of Platform Engineering that excites me the most.
