The Beauty of The Scandalous Parting of the water in the Bible

The parting of the water is a recurring symphony in the Old Testament. From Moses at the Red Sea (Exodus 14) to Joshua at the Jordan (Joshua 3) and the prophets Elijah and Elisha (2 Kings 2), the narrative is clear: the waters divide, and people walk through on dry ground.

To the modern mind, these stories are often the first to be dismissed. We relegate them to metaphor or fairy tales because they don’t just defy “probability”, they defy the fundamental laws of physics and mass balance.

1. The Physics of the “Scandal”

If we look at these events through the lens of fluid dynamics, the logistical “collateral damage” would be catastrophic:

• The Tsunami Problem (The Red Sea): Displacing billions of cubic meters of water to create a path tens of kilometers long and hundreds of meters deep is a massive allocation of energy. In a closed physical system, that water has to go somewhere. Sudden displacement on that scale should, by all accounts, trigger a mega-tsunami on the opposing shores.
• The Mass Balance Problem (The Jordan River): The Jordan is a flowing system. If the water “stands in a heap” upstream, the downstream flow should vanish, causing an immediate drought and ecological collapse in the lower basin. Conversely, when that “heap” eventually releases, it would create a flash flood that would sweep away anything in its path.

In the biblical account, however, there is no mention of a tsunami or a downstream drought. The “pathway” exists in a vacuum of physical consequence. This is a scandal to the scientific mind because it suggests a total suspension of the rules we live by.

2. The Blinder of “Order”

For a long time, I struggled with this. I felt that if I couldn’t explain how it happened, I couldn’t believe that it happened. I was wearing a “blinder”, the assumption that even the Creator of the universe must submit to the “Terms and Conditions” of His own creation.

We live in a culture that demands every phenomenon be supported by a scientific “order.” But this is a logical fallacy. If God created the laws of physics, He is, by definition, outside of them.

3. The Sovereignty of the “Non-Zero-Sum”

Why would God choose to “thread the needle” this way? Why not just use a natural earthquake or a strong wind that we could later explain away?

The answer lies in the credit.

If the parting of the water followed the rules of physics, the credit would be divided. We would analyze the wind speed, the tide cycles, and the tectonic plates. We would calculate the probability and perhaps conclude that the Israelites were simply “lucky” or that the timing was a “quantum fluke.” God would be hidden behind the variables.

But when physics and mass balance are suspended, there is only one variable left: Divine Sovereignty. By breaking the rules of the house, God makes it impossible to ignore the Master of the house. It is a “non-zero-sum” intervention where God provides a way out without creating a new problem elsewhere.

Reflection: The God of the Impossible Gap

The realization that God can “edit the variables” of reality changes the way we view our own lives. Most of us live our lives calculating the “mass balance” of our problems: If I lose this job, I lose my house. If this relationship fails, my future is over. If the math doesn’t add up, the outcome is certain.

We become prisoners of the “rules.”

But the God of the Jordan River is a God who can stop the flow without causing a flood. He is a God who can open a path through your Red Sea without the resulting tsunami of “consequences” crashing down on you.

What this means for us:

1. Infinite Trust: If God is not bound by the rules of physics, He is certainly not bound by the rules of your current “impossible” situation. Your lack of a “Scenario A” or “Scenario B” for survival does not limit Him.
2. Radical Stillness: We can “be still and know that He is God” because the pressure to find a “logical” solution is off our shoulders. If He can hold water in a heap, He can hold your life together.
3. A Non-Zero-Sum Life: We often fear that for us to be blessed, someone else must lose, or that for us to be saved, a different disaster must occur. These stories remind us that when God intervenes, He can create a Third Way — a path that exists simply because He willed it to be.

The Challenge: Identify the “rule” or “system” you feel trapped by today. Is it a financial limit? A health prognosis? A career dead-end? Reflect on this: If God can suspend the laws of the entire physical universe just to make a path for His people, can He not suspend the “rules” of your situation to make a path for you?

Trust the Programmer, not the code. It is well, and it will always be well, because He is Him.
