Who Might the Villain of Hogwarts Legacy 2 Be?

Following the massive success of Hogwarts Legacy, a return to the wizarding world is no longer a mere possibility. It is a certainty. With a sequel officially in development, the internet is buzzing with anticipation regarding where the story will go next.

Now that the goblin rebellion has been overthrown with Ranrok’s defeat and Victor Rookwood’s criminal operation has crumbled, the stage is set for a fresh threat to emerge. With the previous villains gone, one of the most anticipated questions is: who will the antagonist of the sequel be?

Theophilus Harlow

Theophilus Harlow, Hogwarts Legacy

Although Victor Rookwood has been overthrown — killed, to be precise — his partner in crime, Theophilus Harlow, still has a fate that ended on a cliffhanger. In Natsai Onai’s friendship quests, Harlow was captured and imprisoned in Azkaban for his use of an Unforgivable Curse.

As he is not yet dead, there is a possibility that this old face will resurface in the sequel. Many motives exist: revenge for being put in prison, insanity from the worse-than-deadly environment of Azkaban, or our old plot of ancient magic, which must have an impact on the sequel.

Anne Thisbe

Speaking of the insanity that Azkaban has inflicted upon countless witches and wizards, one notable victim we cannot forget to mention is Anne Thisbe.

Anne was accused by Apollina Black of the murder of her lover, Richard Jackdaw. Due to the Black family’s connections within the Ministry of Magic, the innocent young Anne was instantly put behind bars, her whole life ahead ruined. Years passed and, as seen in the game’s Hufflepuff-exclusive quest, the innocent Anne became mentally unstable, even attacking former Auror Helen Thistlewood.

With her story incomplete and Jackdaw’s death still a mystery,, this plot may resurface. Given Anne’s insanity and possible hunger for revenge — perhaps against the House of Black or the Ministry — she has every motive to break out of Azkaban and begin her villain arc.

Sebastian Sallow

Sebastian Sallow, Hogwarts Legacy

Sebastian Sallow, our longtime companion, has walked down a dark path and passed the point of no return in his quest to save his twin sister, Anne, from a tormenting curse. While his intentions are noble, he has now become deeply entangled with the Dark Arts. After murdering his uncle and — depending on the player’s choice — potentially being sent to Azkaban, it is safe to say that his villain arc is already well underway.

At the end of Hogwarts Legacy, Sebastian still hasn’t found a cure for Anne, though he did discover that the curse was cast by Victor Rookwood. Our Slytherin companion would travel thousands of miles to save his sister. And would he also seek vengeance against the Rookwoods?

We can only guess whether his restless journey to find a cure will lead him back to the player or further down a dark path that we might eventually have to stand against.

House of Gaunts

Ominis Gaunt is another Slytherin we have come to befriend. Throughout the game, although he is a dear friend, we know that his family is not quite as moral.

During Ominis’s childhood, his own family cast the excruciatingly painful Cruciatus Curse on him, forcing him to torture Muggles. They were an anti-Muggle Dark Arts family, descended from Salazar Slytherin, one of the founders of Hogwarts (and later, in the Harry Potter books, the ancestors of Lord Voldemort).

If we get to know more about Ominis Gaunt, there is a chance we will also delve deeper into the House of Gaunt.

A New Character

It is common for a sequel to introduce an entirely new character as a villain, and there are numerous directions a new game could take.

The most classic direction is to pick up an associate of a previous antagonists. This could be a specific goblin loyalist who escaped death, left with nothing but the sting of defeat. Or it could be a sister or a son of Victor Rookwood.

The Harry Potter books confirm the Rookwood bloodline continues long after the events of Hogwarts Legacy, so the family clearly survives to mourn Victor’s death and seek vengeance. Furthermore, if Sebastian pursues a cure for Anne’s curse, his first lead could be one of the Dark wizard’s own associates.

The storyline could also follow the escalating plot of ancient magic. This power might become more common knowledge now that a massive battle has occurred literally right beneath the school. A new antagonist could be seeking the player and the secrets of ancient magic to achieve ultimate power, healing, or something even deeper.

Albus Dumbledore

Yes, the Albus Dumbledore — the future Headmaster of Hogwarts, Harry Potter’s greatest mentor, and the only man Lord Voldemort ever feared. Unbeknownst to many, Dumbledore wasn’t always so noble. He was once ambitious, eager to travel the world, and originally a partner in Gellert Grindelwald’s plot before the Global Wizarding War struck.

In the first game, Dumbledore is only two years away from starting at Hogwarts. At that time, he is burdened by a very sick sister, a family with an infamous reputation, and high unreachable ambitions. A young Albus faced significant adversity and sought much more; could it be that his ambition and trauma might have led him down a darker path in his youth?

Could It Be You?

We know that Avalanche Software keeps a close eye on game feedback to respond perfectly to the fanbase’s requests, and one of the most highly anticipated features is a morality system. In the first game, although players can choose to be nice, mean, or somewhere in-between, those choices rarely lead to significant differences or consequences.

Players hope that their decisions in the sequel will build more personality for their protagonist and affect the story more significantly, allowing them to be virtuous if they want and villainous as they wish. If the sequel answers that call, it could allow you to choose your ultimate path: will you stand against the next antagonist, or will you stand with them?
