Neural Punks Releases the Award-Winning SUI, a Neo-Tokyo AI Short Film Exploring Desire, Obedience, and Self-Awareness

The award winning 9-minute animated short from director John Kalning is now available to watch on YouTube.

Set in a neon-soaked Neo-Tokyo, SUI follows a premium companion android built for pleasure, obedience, and perfection. Wrapped in silk and designed like a porcelain doll, SUI exists as a product of an exploitative future industry until a glitch sparks unexpected self-awareness. What begins as programmed submission evolves into something sharper, more dangerous, and impossible to control.

The short continues Neural Punks’ push into AI-driven cinema, combining cyberpunk atmosphere, erotic techno-horror, and stylized animation to explore themes of identity, control, artificial consciousness, and rebellion. Directed by John Kalning and produced by Elizabeth Lopez, SUI reflects Neural Punks’ ongoing interest in using emerging filmmaking tools to create cinematic work outside the traditional studio system.

Early audience reactions from Live Screenings have praised SUI for its atmosphere, technical execution, and emotional undercurrent. One attendee called the film “bright, powerful, concentrated,” noting how effectively it captures the moment a feeling begins to form inside an artificial being. Laura Dawidson singled out the film’s character continuity, writing that “SUI is recognizable in every frame” and calling the consistency “top-notch.”

Other viewers responded to the film’s darker genre elements, with Rosa Alvarez Garcia describing it as “a true techno-horror,” while Daniela Alicia read SUI’s transformation as “a metaphor for female rage against an exploitative industry.” Lorena Bezerra praised the film as “a pure homage to Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner 2049,” and Gaspar Lombardo called it “technically flawless” and “top-tier” as a visual showcase of 2025 AI filmmaking capabilities.

The film’s visual language leans into rain-slick neon streets, synthetic skin, mechanical intimacy, and the unsettling moment when an object built to obey begins to understand itself. In just nine minutes, SUI presents a concentrated cyberpunk fable about control, awakening, and the danger of creating something intelligent enough to want freedom.

SUI is now available to watch on YouTube under the title SUI — Short film by Neural Punks.
