The Real Reason INFJs Communicate in Cryptic Ways
INFJs are often accused of being vague, cryptic, or “hard to understand”. They don’t seem to be speaking in sentences but symbols. Their words are often the outer shell of an inner experience that is difficult to fit into ordinary language.
And for INFJs who grew up in environments where direct expression wasn’t safe, cryptic communication becomes both a shield and a test, a way to reveal and conceal at the same time.
But beneath all of that, the deeper truth is that most INFJs are not trying to maximize comprehension; they are trying to maximize understanding.
In other words, they might not care whether you understand the literal words.
They care whether you understand the experience and feelings behind the words.
Their subconscious mind (via Ni) constantly feeds them insights in the form of patterns, abstractions, inklings, symbols, etc., which don’t feel easily translatable into ordinary language.
And that’s where the disconnect begins.
Many people communicate from direct observations:
“The meeting went badly.”
INFJs often communicate from patterns and abstractions:
“Something about the energy in the room felt off-center.”
The problem is that patterns are harder to verify than observations.
What feels obvious internally may sound vague externally, like trying to describe a dream and realizing how incoherent it sounds once spoken.
On top of that, being introverted and solitary creatures, most INFJs are not particularly great at the art of verbal acrobatics, the way many extroverts are, hence the struggle.
Having said all that, not every cryptic expression is meant to be fully understood. In online INFJ spaces especially, you’ll often find trauma‑adapted INFJs who want two conflicting things simultaneously:
- To be fully understood.
- To remain partially hidden.
See the dilemma here?
In households where direct expression wasn’t allowed, the INFJ adapted to using indirect or cryptic ways to express their feelings.
Instead of saying:
“You hurt me.”
they might say:
“Some people don’t realize the effect they have on others.”
This allows emotional expression while the message is partially concealed.
INFJs from such backgrounds may also use ambiguous or cryptic expression as a way to test who “gets it”, a kind of code meaning:
“If you understand this, you’ve been through something similar.”
and that can feel deeply validating.
This type of communication can also become:
“If you really care for me, you’ll infer what I mean even if I am being ambiguous or cryptic.”
The problem with this is that understanding is no longer based on communication.
It’s based on mind-reading.
Few people can pass that test consistently.
The irony in all of this is that the more symbolic, indirect, and layered the expression becomes, the more room there is for misunderstanding.
Healthy and emotionally mature INFJs often learn that being understood requires a willingness to be disappointingly explicit.
Instead of:
“You should know.”
they learn to say:
“Here’s exactly what I mean.”
Instead of:
“Read between the lines to prove to me you care.”
they learn to write the actual lines.
In that sense, one sign of INFJ maturity is realizing that clarity is not the enemy of depth. A profound idea doesn’t become less profound because it’s expressed unambiguously.
Sometimes the deepest expression is simply the most direct.

Stay Expressive ✌️
Please note: I’m purposely excluding conditions like Autism, ADHD, C-PTSD, Social Communication Disorder, high neuroticism, or SAD for brevity’s sake, but any of them would make an INFJ even more prone to being misunderstood. The struggle is real.
