Mythology Needle Pig Gin Review

If you have been following my reviews on products from the Mythology Distillery, you would know that each one comes with a backstory that explains how we got there. It ties into both the liquid and the bottle itself. For the Needle Pig, the tale is as follows

“ A Trapper glided quietly through a field of juniper until he crossed paths with a Needle Pig. They both froze. The Trapper’s hand moved slowly to his spear when a mighty roar exploded from the forest. He grabbed his spear. The Needle Pig spread its quills & they both turned to face a charging grizzly bear. At the prospect of facing such a ferocious defence, the bear turned and fled.

Inspired by the spirit of Needle Pig, we hand a botanical gin that’s not afraid to stand on its own.”

Based on the riveting story above I am looking for something that is loud, proud. A little spice that stings my tongue would also be nice. An assault on my tastebuds. Apparently there are only six botanicals and if you have read any of my gin reviews before, firstly, hi mom and dad, and secondly, you will know that I appreciate the simplicity. Good ingredients need a place to shine.

The nose is filled with both a grapefruit citrus and a juniper pineiness. The herbal sage notes however take center stage and give a herbal kick that is perfect to cut through tonic.

On the palette there is an undeniable sticky sweetness that comes through with star anise. The sage and citrus found on the nose are there but take a back seat, with the grapefruit coming strong in the finish. Make no mistake however, juniper is the needle pig in the story. Standing tall in the face of any predator or mixer that may come in its way.

At the end of the day I am sort of a traditionalist when it comes to gin. Not every time, but I love when juniper is the star, with interesting and complementary botanicals adding further dimensions but not taking away from it. And if that is your criteria as well, then this bottle hits the mark.
