Esoteric SACD: Brahms Concerto #2

The Brahms Concerto #2 is a towering masterpiece, blending intricate emotional depth with technical brilliance. When performed live, as it was by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra on November 4th, 2022, alongside Dvořák’s Symphony №6, it demonstrates the enduring power of classical music to captivate and move its audience. This particular recording on Esoteric SACD provides a stunning rendition of the piece, though it’s unfortunate that the inner sleeve contains only Japanese notes, making the detailed commentary inaccessible to non-Japanese readers. Nevertheless, the music itself tells an incredible story, and its four movements form an emotional narrative of conflict, resolution, and joy.

Unfortunately this disk only has Japanese write up so I’m unable to read the contents on the inner sleeve which folds out into four parts protecting a CD sleeve. Atypical for an Esoteric SACD for sure.

First Movement — Allegro non troppo The first movement begins with a dramatic and compelling interplay between the orchestra’s sections, each contributing to the tension and eventual resolution. The strings provide a steady, persistent voice, climbing three steps forward and falling two back, as if striving toward an unreachable goal. The French horns, like a soothing parent, offer moments of calm amidst the storm, gently reassuring in their tone. The thematic contrasts create a dynamic push and pull: chaos versus peace, masculinity against femininity, rage clashing with calm. Through it all, the main voice seems acutely aware of its torment, grappling with these opposing forces. As the movement progresses, the strings seem to demand action, while the horns offer comfort, leading to a triumphant and satisfying conclusion.

Second Movement — Allegro appassionato The second movement delves into introspection, with the main voice alternating between contemplation and determination. The supporting tones from strings, flutes, and horns are more subdued, creating a sense of inner debate. The strings, however, occasionally rise to insist on resolution, adding urgency to the deliberation. Amid this, the clarinet seeks to mediate, its voice calm and diplomatic. As the tension builds, the movement reaches a dramatic finish, led decisively by the strings, as if a conclusion has been forced rather than reached organically.

Third Movement — Andante The third movement offers a stark contrast, opening with a serene and measured pace. The bass provides a steady foundation while the violin leads a romantic and tender melody. The piano, soft and contemplative, reaches skyward, evoking a poignant yearning for lost love. Yet, this tranquility is interrupted by a spirited debate between the piano and strings, where the strings plead with fervor, and the piano articulates its position with clarity. As the argument subsides, a moment of reconciliation emerges. The strings respond with tenderness, and the piano’s initial surprise gives way to exuberance. The movement concludes with an overwhelming sense of peace and unity, as if the two have embraced and decided to walk forward into a new dawn together.

Fourth Movement — Allegro grazioso The final movement is a celebration of harmony and friendship. The piano and strings, now reconciled, frolic together in a cheerful exchange. The clarinet introduces a reflective tune, prompting the strings to look back on their earlier conflicts with embarrassment. Playfulness abounds, but a shadow of discord briefly returns, hinting at the fragility of this newfound camaraderie. However, the oboe and flute inject lightheartedness, while the piano boldly declares that all differences have been overcome. The movement builds to a joyous climax, with the strings finally joining the celebration, declaring solidarity in their unity. The work concludes with a triumphant and uplifting resolution, leaving the listener with a sense of profound contentment.

Brahms’s Concerto #2, as captured on this Esoteric SACD, is an extraordinary musical journey. Each movement offers a nuanced exploration of conflict, emotion, and reconciliation, ultimately culminating in a triumphant declaration of unity and joy. Despite the limitation of not being able to read the liner notes, the performance speaks volumes on its own, showcasing the timeless beauty and emotional depth of this masterpiece. It is truly a lovely work, one that resonates with the human experience and celebrates the enduring power of music.
