Rachel’s observation of Megan kissing another man through her train window serves as a turning point. After Megan disappears soon after, Rachel becomes obsessed with discovering the truth. Despite her unreliability, she dives into the investigation, calling Scott to report what she saw. However, Rachel struggles with her memories from the night Megan went missing. She can’t recall everything clearly because she was drunk and near Tom and Anna’s neighborhood.

As the investigation continues, Megan’s psychiatrist, Dr. Kamal Abdic, becomes the initial suspect due to their affair. Yet, as Rachel’s memories begin to come back, disturbing truths about Tom surface. He had been abusive during their marriage, exploiting Rachel’s blackouts to undermine her sanity. The shocking revelation reveals that Megan was pregnant with Tom’s child and that he killed her in a rage when she threatened to keep the baby.

In the climax, Rachel and Anna confront Tom after uncovering his lies. Rachel kills him in self-defense when he attacks her, finally breaking free from his control. After learning the truth about Tom, Anna supports Rachel. For the first time in years, Rachel begins to reclaim her life, liberated from her failed marriage, alcoholism, and fixation on the past.

As the book ends, Rachel is stepping into an uncertain but independent future. Once a symbol of escape and longing, her daily train rides now represent a chance to move on. The “girl on the train” has transformed into the author of her own life rather than just a passive observer of others.
