Culture in the Age of Digital Growth

There is no question that the rise of digital technology has created its own culture in the business and personal world. With the pandemic of 2020 forcing more people to rely on digital technology, the impact on culture has only grown. For businesses, the creation of a digital platform for internal communications, making decisions, and reaching out to customers has brought to light some important deficiencies.
The reduction of interpersonal communication in a face-to-face setting has given rise to three important issues that have become part of the digital age. Poor focus on customers, the siloed mindset, and aversion to risk are key elements in the growth of businesses. To effectively deal with each of these issues, it is important to understand what they mean and methods of how they can be overcome.
Lack of Customer Focus
Conducting most, if not all your work on a digital platform, it can be easy to lose focus on the very people that keep your company in the business, the customers. There are several reasons why this happens, but for the most part, being isolated with only the computer or device screen as the connection point, the customer may seem farther away and less important.
Big corporations have seen their customer interactions fall away, which is why they employ teams who only work directly with customers. From billing to answering questions to posting on social media and more, there has been a renewed effort to focus on the very people who keep them in business. The same can be done with smaller businesses that have lost focus on providing the best in customer service.
Siloed Mentality
One of the most difficult challenges for any business operating on digital platforms to overcome is the siloes mentality. Sitting in front of a screen and often at home, remote workers do not feel the same connection to their employers as those in an office setting. This mentality leads to less communication within the company. This means less information is shared and fewer collaborations are performed between departments which are crucial to continued growth.
Overcoming siloed mentality starts with breaking up the lines of the organization so that employees feel more connected to the company. Creating more interaction between departments provides a broader picture of what the company does for employees which in turn builds a larger purpose that helps motivate them to improve productivity.
Risk Aversion
This has been a common issue long before the digital age. For centuries, one of the biggest problems with business growth has been an aversion to taking reasonable chances. While it pays to be prudent, there are times in which a business will have to take chances if it wants to grow and survive. The digital age has made risk aversion even more problematic.
Successful businesses deal with risk aversion largely through delegation. Those in charge set the goals and delegate to the employees how they reach them. In addition, pulling inspiration from the outside helps to lower the aversion to risk. Thinking outside the box must be encouraged so that reasonable risks can be taken.
The challenges of the digital age in business culture can be overcome with the right methods in place. It will take time, patience, and reorganization, but positive results can occur.
