Beyond Policy: How SPAC Nxtion’s Safe Houses Are Saving Young Lives Across London

Every week in London, we read the same headline: another teenager stabbed, another young life hanging in the balance. The debate that follows is always the same too.

Policing. Policy. Punishment.

But rarely do we ask a more uncomfortable question: who is actually willing to live with the young people caught in the middle of it all? Who is actually willing to spend their time in seeing these young people succeed?

For the past 21 years, SPAC Nxtion has been doing exactly that.

Across London today, 23 ‘safe houses’ provide refuge to more than 100 young people who have been victims of gang violence, perpetrators of crime, or young people simply born into environments that offer them very few choices. We call this being from Low-Socio Economic & Leadership backgrounds.

These houses are not theoretical programmes. They are homes. What started off as ‘TRAP (Take Risks and Proposer) Houses have now evolved into what we call Economical Development Centres (EDC’s).

The model began over ten years ago when Pastor Tobi Adegboyega (PT) opened his own home to young people that many had already written off. That simple act grew into a network of houses where mentorship, structure and accountability are part of everyday life.

Imagine a space where young people share the same common goal, have access to leadership and mentorship, gather and prefer solutions for a generation. Yes. This is what these houses represent. Where society has labelled these young people as lost, this housing system helps them to redefine their narrative.

As someone who has spent 16 years working in Child Protection as a Qualified Social Worker, I know the systems that exist to support vulnerable young people. Local authorities work seemingly hard, but the reality is that systems alone cannot replace consistent human involvement. Society’s systems are breaking. I see it daily on a first-hand basis. Young people don’t just need placements. They need people who will stand with them until real change happens, which is tough for today’s climate.

Take fourteen-year-old Damar. A young person who I personally housed in 2019. Only a few years ago, he was chased down a busy road and stabbed seven times. With the consent of his mother, who requested Damar be housed by us, he started living in a safe house — supported and guided while we worked with local authorities and education services to move him from a pupil referral unit back into mainstream education.

For young people like Damar, safety is not an abstract concept. It is the difference between life and death.

The truth is that tackling youth violence requires more than policies and promises. It requires communities willing to open their doors, invest their time and who refuse to give up on young lives.

Sometimes the most powerful intervention is also the simplest: someone deciding that a young person still deserves a chance.

The future of this work with PT, the Nxtion Family, and our leadership approach is clear: we are not building a temporary response to the crisis, but a long-term leadership movement that refuses to abandon young people. PT has shown us that real change begins when leadership is not distant, but present; not performative, but sacrificial.

The Nxtion Family model is rooted in opening homes, building people, and creating environments where discipline, love, accountability and vision can coexist. Our approach is not simply to rescue young people from danger, but to raise them into leaders who can transform families, communities and industries.

Where others see risk, we see responsibility. Where others see damaged young people, we see future nation builders. That is the future of this work: a generation led, housed, restored and developed by people who have decided that giving up is not an option.
