Why the smartest network-effects theory of the 2000s has nothing to do with technology at all

What ecology teaches founders about the difference between a network that compounds and one that quietly dies

I’ve been building something in the creative economy for a while now, and there’s one thing that keeps me up more than revenue or valuation. It’s whether the trust inside the network is dense enough yet to hold its own weight.

Here’s why that question matters more than growth.

Metcalfe’s Law doesn’t hold up

Andrew Chen’s The Cold Start Problem makes an argument I can’t stop thinking about. Metcalfe’s Law, the old “value grows as the square of the network” idea that justified a decade of dot-com valuations, is elegant but wrong for how real networks actually behave. It says more nodes is always better. It says nothing about what happens before you have enough nodes, or what happens when you have too many.

What meerkats know that Metcalfe didn’t

Chen points somewhere more useful: ecology. Specifically, meerkats.

Meerkats survive in mobs of thirty to fifty. Below a certain group size, called the Allee Threshold, a lone or thin cluster of meerkats can’t post enough lookouts to spot predators. Fewer meerkats means more get picked off, which means even fewer meerkats, which means the mob spirals toward zero. But cross that threshold and the dynamic flips entirely. More animals means better predator detection, which means the group is safer, which means it grows faster. Same species, same environment, two completely different trajectories, and the only variable is whether you crossed the line first.

Sardines off Monterey lived and died by the same math. Millions of tons of sardines a year, then a population collapse so total that an entire industry, an entire town, was gone within a few seasons. Once a school falls below its threshold, no amount of waiting brings it back.

Same underlying system, two completely different shapes, and the only variable is which side of the line you started on.

Every network I’ve ever tried to build, and every founder I know who’s tried to build one, has lived inside this curve without naming it.

Why this isn’t just a metaphor

Any platform where the core value depends on people actively vouching for, endorsing, or verifying each other lives on this exact curve. Below a certain density of real, active endorsement, the whole thing reads as empty. A profile with no signal looks worse than no profile at all. A network where nobody bothers to endorse anybody gives the next person no reason to show up either. That’s the meerkat spiral. Thin population, no protection, drift toward zero.

Above that density, it flips. Enough people genuinely vouching for each other and the endorsement itself becomes the fastest, most trusted signal in the market. New members show up specifically to earn it. The network densifies on its own. That’s the mob that keeps growing because it can now protect itself.

There’s no gentle slope between those two states. You’re on one side of the threshold or the other. Most of the real work in the early days of any trust-based network is figuring out exactly where that line sits, quietly, before you ever try to scale past it.

The uncomfortable part most founders skip

Everyone loves talking about the growth side of network effects. Nobody wants to talk about the collapse side, because admitting your network could fall back under the threshold means admitting that growth isn’t a one-way ratchet.

But it isn’t. MySpace didn’t die because Facebook had a better product on day one. It died because users started leaving, which made it less useful for the users who remained, which made more of them leave. Sardines don’t slowly recover once they cross back under their threshold. Neither do most social products.

For any platform where the value proposition depends on trust density rather than raw headcount, this is existential. A trust network with too few real endorsements isn’t a smaller version of a working one. It’s a different thing entirely, and it’s not one that fixes itself with more marketing spend.

The real founder question

If you’re building anything with network effects, the question worth obsessing over isn’t “how do I grow.” It’s “where is my threshold, and have I actually verified I’ve crossed it, or am I just hoping momentum shows up before the population thins out.”

Most of us are optimizing the wrong side of that curve. We chase acquisition numbers while the actual game is happening underneath, in whether the core group we already have is dense enough to sustain itself without us pushing.

I’d rather have a small circle of people who trust each other completely than a large crowd who’ve never heard of each other.

That’s not a growth strategy. That’s a survival strategy, and it comes first.
