Fighting the Fear of Being Judged: My Journey with the BYBS Fellowship

How the Build Your Best Self (BYBS) Fellowship helped me find my voice and believe in my potential.

Before I joined the Build Your Best Self (BYBS) Fellowship, I was my own biggest obstacle. My greatest struggle was a severe lack of confidence, particularly when it came to speaking in public. Whenever I had to present an idea in class or participate in a group workshop, an overwhelming wave of anxiety would hit me.

The Shadow of Doubt

I was paralyzed by the fear of being judged. I constantly questioned myself with thoughts like, “What if they laugh at me?” or “What if my English isn’t good enough?” Because I was so afraid of making mistakes or sounding foolish, I often chose to remain quiet, even when I had valuable insights to share.

This fear bled into my professional life as well. I struggled to approach new people, which made networking a daunting task. I lacked a clear vision for my career and felt entirely unprepared for the digital and professional demands of the modern workplace. I knew I had potential, but I didn’t know how to unlock it.

Finding My Voice in the Fellowship

Joining BYBS was the turning point. Stepping into the fellowship meant confronting my fears head-on. At first, it was incredibly difficult. I still felt that familiar knot in my stomach during group discussions and public speaking exercises.

However, the environment fostered by the BYBS mentors and my fellow participants changed everything. It was a space built on encouragement rather than criticism. I quickly learned that making mistakes wasn’t a failure; it was a necessary stepping stone to growth. The unwavering support of the facilitators motivated me to keep trying, pushing me to express my thoughts and share my ideas without the fear of judgment.

Practical Tools for Transformation

The fellowship didn’t just tell me to “be more confident” it gave me the actual tools and practical skills to back it up. We were trained in essential digital tools, which demystified processes I once found intimidating. I learned how to:

Organize and present ideas using Google Slides.

Collect and structure information with Google Forms.

Manage data efficiently using Google Sheets.

Handle my finances practically using the My Money app.

Beyond digital literacy, BYBS focused on career readiness. I learned how to craft a compelling CV, write professional cover letters, and compose effective emails. Learning how to build genuine professional relationships also demystified the art of networking, making me feel comfortable starting conversations with new people.

Building the Habit of Growth

To reinforce what I was learning in the classroom, I knew I had to take action outside of our sessions. I started practicing public speaking on my own every day, a habit that involved simply standing in front of a mirror and speaking out loud. Hearing my own voice and learning to articulate my thoughts comfortably was a game-changer. It allowed me to calm my nerves and refine how I communicated.

Who I Am Today

Today, the transformation is undeniable. Instead of letting fear silence me, I actively challenge myself to speak up. I confidently participate in class discussions, workshops, and training sessions. I can answer questions, pitch my ideas, and engage with others without the paralyzing fear of judgment.

I’ve come to realize that confidence isn’t an overnight switch; it is built through consistent, daily effort and the willingness to step outside your comfort zone. I’ve learned to embrace the journey of growth rather than demanding instant perfection.

I am incredibly grateful to the mentors, facilitators, and organizers of the BYBS Fellowship for creating an environment where young people can truly discover their potential. As I move forward in my academic and professional journey, I will carry these lessons with me. I plan to keep expanding my network, refining my communication, and applying these skills to create a positive impact in my community.

The BYBS Fellowship helped me transform my fear into confidence. I have found my voice, and I am no longer afraid to use it.
