Other top prospect performances:

Pirates RHP Nick Kingham, Triple-A Indianapolis: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K — Kingham continued to dominate the International League, going six-plus frames without an earned run allowed for the third time in four starts. The 22-year-old has a 0.34 ERA thus far with a 20-to-5 K-to-BB through 26 2/3 innings. If and when the Pirates need starting pitching down the stretch, don’t be surprised if Kingham is the guy.

A’s 3B Renato Nunez, Class A Advanced Stockton: 2-for-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R — Nunez has had a monster week, bopping five long balls in his past seven games while going 14-for-31 (.452). The 20-year-old has impressive pop for his age, managing 19 homers and 27 doubles last year. He’s already approaching those totals with 16 dingers and 20 two-baggers with the Ports.

Nationals RHP Austin Voth, Class A Advanced Potomac: 7 IP, 2 h, ER, HR, BB, 7 K — After proving he had far too much experience and pitchability for the Class A South Atlantic League, Voth has dominated in his first two starts in the Class A Advanced Carolina League. He’s allowed just one earned run over 13 innings while striking out a batter per inning. The big test for Voth will come at Double-A, where his polish as a 22-year-old University of Washington product will prove less valuable.

Tigers RHP Austin Kubitza, Class A West Michigan: 5 IP, 3 H, BB, 4 K — Kubitza, like Voth, should be expected to pitch his way out of Class A based on his success in college, but the Rice product has seen his command waver at times — like when he walked five Fort Wayne batters on June 22. When he’s in the zone, he’s been too good for the Midwest League, and boasts a 2.37 ERA this season.

Cardinals 2B Mason Katz, Class A Peoria: 3-for-6, 2 HR, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R — The LSU product has some impressive pop, and his 14 homers are tied for the most in the Midwest League. The 2013 fourth-rounder is striking out at a high rate for a college product in Class A, but if he can make some more consistent contact, he could become a full-fledged prospect in St. Louis’ system.

D-backs SS Andrew Velazquez, Class A South Bend: 3-for-6, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 K, SB — Velazquez has reached base in 59 straight games. The 19-year-old has a .301/.377/.465 triple slash with 30 steals in 36 chances and is emerging as a breakout prospect in Arizona’s system.

Rangers OF Lewis Brinson, Class A Hickory: 2-for-5, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, K — Brinson has been limited to 39 games by injuries this season, which is a shame because the toolsy 20-year-old needs as many reps as he can get. He has cut down on the strikeouts this season, going from 191 punchouts in 122 games in 2012 to 42 strikeouts this season. If he can keep that up and stay on the field, he could see time in Class A Myrtle Beach at some point this year.
