The Algorithm of Abhinaya- Chapter 3: Raagas and Strings

Kuchipudi weaves together movement, rhythm, and storytelling.

While a string is a programming concept, it finds practical and metaphorical application in Kuchipudi dance. A string in Python refers to a sequence of characters used to represent text. It is a fundamental data type for handling textual data.

What comes to my mind when I think of the application of strings in dance is Raaga

Raaga refers to a rhythmic blueprint for improvisation in Indian classical music. It defines the emotional mood of the song(devotion, valor, love, etc) and which notes to use. There are different kinds of raagas in dance- kalyani, anandabhairavi, dhananshree, hamsadhwani, mohana, etc.

Many times, the dance item is named after the Raaga it is set to. Raaga is the musical string that guides the dancer’s expressions on stage. If Python strings are code, Kuchipudi strings are art — one follows strict syntax, the other flows with emotion. But both, in their own ways and create magic!

Let’s take the example of dhanashree raga

• Arohana (Ascending): Sa Ri₂ Ga₂ Ma₁ Pa Dha₂ Ni₂ Sa (S R₂ G₂ M₁ P D₂ N₂ S)
• Avarohana (Descending): Sa Ni₂ Dha₂ Pa Ma₁ Ga₂ Ri₂ Sa (S N₂ D₂ P M₁ G₂ R₂ S)
• We can also write this as
• Arohana: Ni Sa Ga Ma Pa Ni Sa
• Avarohana: Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Ri Sa

Just as a string in programming ties together data with precision, a raga weaves melody with emotion, Kuchipudi dance binds these elements into a living art form.
