The Lazy Way to Unzip Files Online (No Install, No Signup)

You downloaded a ZIP file. Or a RAR, or a 7Z, or something with an extension you’ve never seen before. Either way, you need what’s inside it. Simple enough, right?

Except your first search result wants you to upload the thing to some server you’ve never heard of, wait for it to process, then download the results back. That’s three trips your files take when they should be taking zero. And if that archive has anything private in it, tax documents, work files, photos, well, now a stranger’s computer has a copy.

I’ve been running ezyZip since 2009, back when my fur had fewer gray patches. In all that time, the fastest and safest way to unzip a file online hasn’t changed: do it right in your browser, on your own machine, without uploading a single byte. And when I say unzip, I don’t just mean .zip files. Same page, same steps, whether it’s a RAR, a 7Z, a TAR.GZ, an ISO, or something far stranger. Here’s how.

How to unzip files online

The whole thing takes about ten seconds. Head to the ezyZip unzip page and follow these steps.

1. Select your file: Click “Select file to unzip” to open the file chooser, or just drag your archive straight onto the panel. ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, ISO, doesn’t matter. Extraction starts right away, and it lists everything inside once it’s done.
2. Save what you want: Click “Save” on any file to write it to your drive. Only need one file out of forty? Grab just that one. No need to unpack the whole archive.
3. Preview or share (optional): For images, audio, video, and documents, click “Preview” to open the file right in the browser before you save it. There’s a “Share” button too if you want to send something on by email or messenger.

That’s the core loop. Select, save, done.

Save everything to a folder at once

Pulling files out one by one gets old fast. If you’re on Chrome or Edge, there’s a better way.

1. Open your archive: Same as above.
2. Click “Save All”: If the button’s greyed out, your browser doesn’t support this feature yet.
3. Pick an empty folder: Choose where you want everything to land. Use an empty folder, because ezyZip will overwrite any files that share a name.
4. Grant access: Your browser asks permission to write to that folder. Click “View files”, then “Save changes”.

The whole archive extracts to your folder with its structure intact. Nested subfolders, timestamps, and all.

What about password-protected archives?

ezyZip handles those too, and not just for ZIP. Encrypted RAR and 7Z archives work the same way. Open the file like normal, and if it’s locked, you’ll get a password prompt. Type it in, click “Set Password”, and extract as usual.

Find one file without unzipping the whole archive

Big archives with deep folder trees are a pain to dig through. So don’t dig. Click the search icon in the top right of the file listing, type at least three characters, and every matching file shows up. From there you can preview or save it directly, or jump to its folder inside the archive. This one’s saved my tail more than once when I knew the filename but had no idea where it was buried.

Unzip an archive straight from a link

Say the archive is hosted on another website and you don’t want to download it first. With the free ezyZip Chrome or Firefox extension installed, you can right-click any link and choose “Extract with ezyZip”, paste the link into the file chooser, or drag the link onto the page. ezyZip fetches it and extracts it, all locally, whatever format it is.

Why doing this in your browser beats installed software

Here’s the honest case for the browser-based approach, and why I think it’s the best way to unzip files online.

Your files never leave your device. ezyZip runs entirely in your browser using a streaming WebAssembly engine. Nothing uploads to a server, which means there’s no waiting for an upload to finish before extraction even starts. Server-based tools have to receive your entire file first. ezyZip starts reading from your disk immediately. On a large archive, the upload time alone can take longer than the whole local extraction.

It’s also more private, by design rather than by promise. Don’t take my word for it. Turn off your WiFi mid-extraction and watch it keep working. No connection, no problem, because no data was going anywhere in the first place.
