I spent 15 years watching people fail at calorie tracking. The problem wasn’t what they ate.
Everyone told me you need a native mobile app to build a health product. “Users expect polished iOS/Android experiences.” They were wrong.

I spent 15 years watching people fail at calorie tracking. The problem wasn’t what they ate.
Everyone told me you need a native mobile app to build a health product. “Users expect polished iOS/Android experiences.” They were wrong.
Here’s why the future of health tracking isn’t in the App Store.
The hidden cost nobody talks about
MyFitnessPal spent millions building a database of 19 million foods. Cronometer obsesses over 82 micronutrients. MacroFactor has an adaptive TDEE algorithm that auto-adjusts based on your weight trends.
Yet the #1 reason people quit isn’t inaccurate data. It’s inconsistency.
The average fitness app loses 77% of users within 3 days. By day 30, retention is under 10%.
Why? The friction.
Download the app (30s). Create an account (60s). Onboarding flow (120s). Learn the UI (180s). Remember to open it 3–6 times a day.
Each step is a drop of friction. Together, they form a wall.
The moment I realized apps were the wrong interface
I built NutritionCheckerBot — an AI calorie tracker that lives entirely inside Telegram.
Open Telegram → send a photo → get calories, protein, fats, carbs. That’s it. No app store, no signup, no onboarding.
MyFitnessPal
• App: MyFitnessPal
• Time to log one meal: 45 seconds
• Monthly cost: $19.99
MacroFactor
• App: MacroFactor
• Time to log one meal: 90+ seconds
• Monthly cost: $5.99 ($71.99 yr)
Cronometer
• App: Cronometer
• Time to log one meal: 60+ seconds
• Monthly cost: $10.99
Cal AI
• App: Cal AI
• Time to log one meal: 25 seconds
• Monthly cost: ~$8.99
Telegram bot
• App: Telegram bot
• Time to log one meal: 7 seconds
• Monthly cost: $3.95
Seven seconds. From “I want to log this” to “done.”
Why Telegram beats native
Three reasons this works:
-
No acquisition funnel. Users hear about the bot, tap a link, and start tracking. No App Store search, no reviews, no download, no account creation.
-
The always-on advantage. Average Telegram user opens the app 20 times per day. Average fitness app? Maybe 2 times on a good day. The bot lives inside an existing habit — it doesn’t compete for attention.
-
Cross-platform for free. Telegram runs on Android, iOS, desktop, web, and even KaiOS. One bot. Everywhere.
The technology behind it
The stack: Telegram → Python → DeepSeek API → SQLite, with GPT-4o for photo verification.
Why DeepSeek? It matches GPT-4o on accuracy (~88%) at roughly 20x lower cost per API call.
Voice messages work too — record what you ate while cooking, it’s transcribed by Whisper, parsed by AI, logged in 2–4 seconds. All in 7 languages.
The retention problem, solved differently
Instead of notifications and streaks, two mechanics work:
- Micro-challenges: 1 photo/day for 7 days → 3 extra free days.
- Paid challenges: $10 entry, pooled, winner takes 90%.
Users come back because tracking is fast, not because we nag.
The business case
At $3.95/month, fewer than 1,000 paid users covers infra. At $10/month premium, a few hundred sustains the whole thing. Compare to MyFitnessPal needing millions of $19.99 subscribers.
What I got wrong
Three assumptions that failed:
“English-first, translate later.” — 40% of early users were Russian-speaking. “Photo recognition is enough.” — Users send photos AND voice AND text corrections. “Subscription-only.” — A free tier converts 3x better than a 7-day trial.
The bottom line
The best calorie tracker iOS app still requires a download. The best one in Telegram requires one tap. That single tap is the moat.
Sometimes the best interface isn’t an interface at all — it’s a conversation.
