What I Found Unique About The QCon Software Development Conference

Continuous learning and having a growth mindset are core values I live by. Attending conferences is a great way to expand knowledge, refine skills, and grow a professional network. Over the years, I’ve participated in several software conferences, each offering its own unique value. This year, I had the privilege of attending **QCon San Francisco** for the first time, and it was an exceptionally rewarding experience. Over the three conference days, I attended various sessions and engaged in rich conversations with conference attendees, speakers, InfoQ team members and editors, track hosts, and volunteers. Reflecting on my experience, here are some aspects that truly set QCon apart.

A Community of Senior Technical Leaders

QCon attracts a specialized audience: senior software engineers, staff/principal engineers, architects, and team leads. This creates an environment where nearly every conversation resonates deeply, as most attendees face similar challenges in their roles. Beyond its focus on senior technologists, the conference impressed me with its diversity and inclusivity. While I do not have official stats, I observed attendees spanning a wide range of genders, race, ethnicity and generations. This inclusivity, combined with a capped number of participants, fostered a sense of intimacy and approachability.

Curated and Forward-Thinking Content

The content at QCon focuses on emerging software trends and innovations in both development and technical leadership. This year’s tracks included:

From frontend innovations to backend challenges, engineering culture to hardware advancements, there was truly something for everyone. Most senior technical professionals would find at least a few tracks of interest if not all.

A Thoughtful Speaker Selection Process

Most conferences follow the Call for Proposals (CFP) process to generate content. QCon follows a different process. The InfoQ team identiufies “track hosts” who are domain experts in their respective fields. The track hosts invite other experts, ensuring sessions are highly relevant, well-curated, and deeply insightful. This deliberate process guarantees that every talk adds value, focusing on meaningful content over quantity.

Interactive Unconference Sessions

Almost every track included one “unconference session,” following the open space concept. These sessions begin without an agenda. Attendees collaboratively define the topics to discuss, making the session highly interactive and participant-driven. I attended one unconference session and found it very valuable. It provided an opportunity to dive into specific challenges, connect with peers who share similar interests, and spark conversations that extended well beyond the session itself.

Built-In Networking Opportunities

Networking wasn’t just a side benefit — it was an integral part of the conference. The 25-minute breaks between sessions, topic-focused lunch discussions, and evening happy hours provided plenty of time to connect with fellow attendees. The conference venue was initimate and sessions did not require pre-registration. This left plenty of time in between sessions to have meaningful hallway conversations.

Prioritizing Impact Over Swag

One standout aspect of QCon was its decision to forego traditional conference swag in favor of donating to charity. Instead of handing out branded items that often end up unused or discarded, QCon chose to make a meaningful impact by supporting charitable causes. This thoughtful choice not only reflects the conference’s commitment to sustainability but also resonated with many attendees, including myself. It was refreshing to see an event of this scale prioritize making a difference over material giveaways.

Session Recordings for Ongoing Learning

One of the most thoughtful features of QCon is that all keynote and track sessions are recorded and made available exclusively to attendees for six months. This is invaluable because, with so many excellent sessions happening simultaneously, it’s impossible to attend everything. Knowing I could revisit the recordings later allowed me to be fully present in the sessions I attended, without fear of missing out.

So Much Learning

Over the three days, I absorbed knowledge across various tracks — not just from the sessions but also through insightful conversations with other attendees. In the coming weeks (months?), I’ll be consolidating all the learnings and sharing in various ways (more blog posts?). I’m also excited to explore ways to apply these insights in my work.
