Six Meters and a Memory

How a wedding sari became a symbol of seven lifetimes — and one wardrobe malfunction

The wedding stage, the mandap, is alive with color, scent, and excitement. Four poles, draped in flowers and mango leaves, hold up the canopy over the alpanas on the floor — delicate patterns made with rice paste to invite blessings and beauty. Incense and spices mingle in the air, fairy lights twinkle, fabrics ripple, and laughter and music fill the space.

The groom arrives with rituals and reverence. The air is thick with anticipation. Enter the bride. Seated on a piri — a low wooden stool — she’s lifted by her brothers and uncles: a veiled queen, trembling in red and gold, her face hidden behind betel leaves, her sari and jewelry heavy with tradition. The platform wobbles, laughter and held breaths ripple through the crowd, but she holds steady — balancing with grace — or, like I did, holding on for dear life to my brother and uncle on either side, hand snaked over their necks, clutching the betel leaves.

Still hidden behind the betel leaves, she’s carried around the groom seven times. Seven circles. Seven silent vows. Commitment of a lifetime. Times seven! That’s Shaat Paak. Slowly, the leaves drop. Their eyes meet. A shared secret smile. The first gaze — Subho Drishti — answered by the conch shells and ululations rising from every corner.

So sweet. I know. But what do you do with the sari that weighs more than you do? The one in which you exchanged that symbolic first glance and committed to not one but seven lifetimes?

It’s a Benarasi — silk with gold and silver threads (zari) and creamy silk threads (resham) woven into floral patterns, creating wearable, expensive, heavy magic. Mine is a shimmering, ornate deep maroon rather than the traditional bright red. I got it safely to the US, packed carefully.

For our first anniversary, we planned a romantic dinner and dancing cruise in San Diego Bay. Spectacular view, sea lions, Navy ships, the iconic Coronado Bridge, and the sparkling waterfront! I thought it was the perfect time to break out the sari — along with the bubbly. Forgot I can count the number of times I’ve worn a sari — and that too, all by myself. No matter. I was all dolled up, heels and all, garnering admiring glances.

A sari is just six meters of fabric — folded, pleated, tucked into an underskirt called a petticoat, and draped around me. One misstep, one snag, one ambitious twirl — and gravity has a field day. Did I mention the dang sari is heavy? And I was wearing heels. Of course, I stepped on it.

Since then, that sari has stayed in cedar blocks. I still wear saris once or twice a year — no mishaps. But that one? That one stays packed. I’m afraid to damage it, though I’m not quite sure what I’ll ever do with it — perfectly preserved, like a rose between the pages.

Maybe that’s how it should be — more than silk and gold, it’s a memory, a story. And some stories, like saris, don’t always need to be worn to be treasured.

This piece was written in response to the November 25 writing prompt: “Have you got an item of clothing you hang onto, but never wear?” — a thoughtful theme set by Emma Vincent. My thanks to Emma for the inspiration, and to Adrienne Beaumont and the editors for creating space for stories woven from memory, fabric, and feeling.
