Tuesday, August 26 is Women’s Equality Day! Here at CUNY SPS, this important day, which honors the 105th anniversary of the women’s right to vote, serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle for women’s rights, and reinforces our School’s own commitment to inclusion, learning, and equity.

What is Women’s Equality Day?
Women’s Equality Day commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. More than a historical milestone, the day also highlights the ongoing efforts toward achieving full gender equality. It is a moment both to honor past progress and to renew our dedication to inclusion and empowerment. Today, organizations across the public and private sectors recognize the occasion through events, presentations, seminars, and other commemorative activities.

Historical Background
On August 26, 1970, the National Organization for Women led a nationwide Women’s Strike for Equality, uniting women from diverse backgrounds to advocate for equal opportunities in employment and education, and for access to 24-hour childcare. This became the largest gender equality protest in U.S. history, with over 100,000 participants across more than 90 cities, including a massive rally of 50,000 marchers in New York City.
In 1971, Congresswoman Bella Abzug proposed that August 26 be officially recognized as Women’s Equality Day. The resolution passed in 1973, and the date was chosen to also honor the certification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

This day not only marks a significant milestone in U.S. history but also serves as a powerful reminder of the work that remains in our pursuit of equity. Celebrating it reinforces CUNY’s core values of diversity, leadership, and professional advancement for all.
