Obstacles, struggles, and setbacks are an inevitable part of life. While we may get knocked down by personal, physical, or even global hardships, it’s the resilience to get back up that matters. UCO’s ‘Passport to Japan’ Offers Three Final Films for Fall

Oct. 25, 2013

Media Contact: Lindsay Houts, Staff Writer, University Relations, University of Central Oklahoma, 405–974–2121, lhouts@uco.edu

UCO’S ‘PASSPORT TO JAPAN’ OFFERS THREE FINAL FILMS FOR FALL

Three “Movie Mondays” remain in the University of Central Oklahoma’s “Passport to Japan” program. Films will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28, Nov. 11 and Nov. 25 in the Pegasus Theater in the Liberal Arts Building on Central’s campus. All screenings are free and open to the public.

The remaining screenings are:

“Ringu,” Oct. 28: Directed by Hideo Nakata, the 1998 film is based on Koji Suzuki’s novel of the same name. “Ringu” became a classic Asian horror film and is best known in the U.S. for its 2002 American remake, “The Ring.” The film asks: What if watching a video could kill its viewers?

“Late Spring,” Nov. 11: Yasujiro Ozu’s 1949 drama is based on Kazuo Hirotsu’s novel “Father and Daughter” and examines the Confucian value of filial piety, or respect for one’s parents. In “Late Spring,” a loyal daughter places her responsibilities for caring for her widowed father over her own desire to marry, despite outside pressures.

“Battle Royale,” Nov. 25: Directed by Kinji Fukasaku, the 2000 action thriller is based on Koushun Takami’s novel of the same name. The film tells the story a young man who is forced by the government to compete in a deadly game in which the participants must kill each other in order to win. The cult classic is popularly believed to have influenced “The Hunger Games,” Suzanne Collins’ 2008 novel.

Initiated in 2004, the Passport UCO program selects a country or region to celebrate during the fall semester. Its mission is to inspire unity and understanding through events that are both educational and entertaining for students and the surrounding community.

“Movie Mondays” are co-sponsored by UCO’s Literature In Performance, a venue for students, faculty, staff and the community to present and discuss all forms of literature.

For more information about Passport UCO or for a listing of events, visit www.uco.edu/passport or email Wayne Stein, Ph.D., coordinator of the Passport UCO program, at wstein@uco.edu.
