Identity and Time Under Narcissistic Siege

Life passing by and memories lost when the law fails to react
The bond between parents and children should be a sacred territory, a space for growth protected by truth, commitment, and affection. Even in situations of divorce, the core of family containment should defend this above all else, even if the dynamic has now bifurcated and the child has two homes and new blended families. In most cases, former spouses manage to find a more or less harmonious way to co-parent. But when one of them possesses a narcissistic or perverse personality, the framework is shattered forever. For the narcissist, children are trophies claimed by their wounded ego out of a Machiavellian idea of victory. From that point on, a systematic emotional pruning begins: a surgical intervention on the child’s psyche to extirpate the loving figure of the other parent from their heart.
The Pruning of the Family Tree: An Assault on Identity
Alienation is a direct assault on the child’s right to identity and emotional freedom. Every human being possesses, from the womb, the inalienable right to integrate into their history the two lineages that shape them. But the manipulator, in their urge for absolute control, decides that one of those branches is toxic, dangerous, or deeply damaged. They will never lack arguments to sustain their fable. Sending a birthday present or a Christmas gift will be labeled as emotional harassment or the forced imposition of parental presence where it is not required.
By implanting slander in the child’s mind, the narcissist constructs — with the effective assistance of an environment of “flying monkeys” who do not dare to challenge them — an insurmountable wall of silence. The child ceases to be a person with independent judgment and becomes an echo of the perverse individual’s voice, an object moved at their whim. They are forced to renounce one half of themselves to emotionally survive in the captor’s environment, an artificial atmosphere where a false sense of material well-being is magnified.
The child is not only psychically annulled; they are robbed of their heritage and their capacity to love without guilt. For the narcissist, who completely lacks empathy, bonds are simple contingencies that can be canceled or substituted according to their convenience.
The Calendar of Absences: What Time Does Not Return
While the judicial system operates on autopilot and case files accumulate in waiting lists that take years, life — and also death — happens. Manipulation and vicarious violence count on an implacable ally: the passage of time. Every birthday without hugs, every graduation where there was no photo, every trip not shared, and every wedding not attended are milestones that the excluded parent must observe from a forced exile. Immobilized by procedural traps and contact restrictions based on false accusations, the “eradicated” father or mother suffers in installments, invents strength and reasons to keep moving forward, and looks at the sky every night praying for a miracle.
These are the experiences that are lost forever; the denied heritage. The tragedy lies in the fact that, even if in a distant future there is a reunification or an attempt at emotional reconnection, the memories and experiences of those hijacked years have no replacement or compensation. One cannot retroactively recover the wonder of childhood, the complicity of adolescence, a fifteenth birthday party, or the emotion of a graduation ceremony.
Reconciliation, when it arrives, is perhaps a balm that tempers the pain; but it will not be a time machine that allows history to be resumed at the exact moment it fractured. The vacuum of those unlived moments remains engraved in the family record like a black hole. Because for the heart of a father or a mother who loves unconditionally, every day of absence bears the mute weight of an eternity.
Slow Justice: An Oscar for Impunity
Meanwhile, the legal system proves to be obsolete and outdated. With its lethargic delays and inability to distinguish systematic abuse from a common conflict, it becomes a silent and necessary accomplice. By granting the benefit of the doubt to the slanders of the alienated child — who is merely repeating a script — justice rewards the narcissist with plenty of time to deepen the damage and mortally wound an irreplaceable bond.
This is not just a conflict-ridden separation, a rather common euphemism used in these cases, nor is it a dispute on equal terms. Here, the child is used by one of the parties as an instrument to systematically harm the other parent. This is not only a form of child abuse but a violation of human rights.
Every day of delay is a new void in the history of the bond. Time, when it comes to family cases, should be measured in “child development units,” not in calendar months. For a judge, a span of thirty days is a mere bureaucratic step; but in the life of a child, it is an eternity of learning rejection. The system ends up rewarding the perverse parent with years of impunity and absolute control over the narrative. Slow justice in these cases is not justice; it is the institutional validation of an abuse that fragments the timeline of many lives.
It is evident that reasonable waiting has been exhausted. It is imperative that society and institutions understand that alienation is a form of violence that leaves permanent scars on the fabric of our human identity. The demand is for those who administer justice and those who legislate: legal loopholes can no longer remain the permeable cloth through which truth and reparation dissolve.
