Most Shopify merchants have some form of abandoned cart recovery set up. Far fewer have built anything around wishlist activity — despite wishlist saves representing a stronger purchase signal than cart additions ever do.

The distinction comes down to intent. A cart addition is frequently impulsive, subject to being abandoned the moment shipping costs or checkout friction appear. A wishlist save carries no such ambiguity: a shopper consciously chose to flag a product for later, which is precisely why wishlist-triggered campaigns consistently outperform generic marketing. Wishlist conversion rates typically range from 5% to 20%, well above standard email benchmarks, because every recipient has already expressed explicit interest in the specific product being promoted.

Price drop alerts are the single highest-leverage wishlist automation available. One documented case involving a jewelry retailer found that introducing automated price drop alerts alone lifted wishlist conversion from 8% to 22%, while cutting the average time between save and purchase from 45 days to 18. The mechanism is straightforward: price is one of the most common reasons a shopper hesitates, and a price drop alert removes that specific barrier at the exact moment it disappears.

The broader category of behavior-triggered email deserves attention here too. Generic promotional blasts convert at roughly 0.09%, while behavior-based triggers — wishlist alerts among them — convert at approximately 5.5%, a roughly sixtyfold difference in effectiveness. This gap exists because triggered emails are, by definition, relevant to the specific recipient in a way broadcast campaigns structurally cannot be.

None of this works, however, if the wishlist itself has friction built into it. Requiring account creation before a shopper can save a product eliminates most first-time visitors from ever using the feature at all. Guest wishlist functionality — saving without an account, syncing to one upon login — is a prerequisite for capturing intent broadly rather than only from already-registered customers.

The pattern worth noting is how rarely this gets built out relative to cart recovery. Abandoned cart flows have become close to standard practice; wishlist automation, despite representing stronger intent data, remains an underused lever across the vast majority of Shopify stores.
