What is an SSID? WiFi Security Explained for Beginners

Wireless networks rely on identifiers to distinguish one network from another. At the heart of this identification process is the Service Set Identifier (SSID) more commonly known as the WiFi network name. Understanding how SSIDs work and how to secure them is a foundational step in building a safe wireless network.

Understanding SSIDs and Related Identifiers

An SSID is the name assigned to a wireless network when a single Wireless Access Point (WAP) is used. For example, if you have one router at home and you name it “HomeWiFi”, that name is the SSID.

In larger environments such as offices, universities, or shopping malls multiple access points may broadcast the same network name to provide seamless coverage. In this case, the network uses an Extended Service Set Identifier (ESSID). Example: A corporate network named “CompanyNet” may be available across multiple floors, even though different access points handle different areas.

For peer to peer connections or temporary networks, such as WiFi Direct or ad hoc mode, an Independent Service Set Identifier (ISSID) is used instead.

Behind the scenes, each access point has a unique identifier called a Basic Service Set Identifier (BSSID). The BSSID is essentially the MAC address of the access point (or the initiating device in ad hoc or WiFi Direct networks). This allows devices to distinguish between multiple access points that are all broadcasting the same ESSID.

Does Knowing the SSID Grant Access?

Knowing the SSID alone does not automatically grant access to a wireless network. A wireless client must configure its network interface card (NIC) to connect to the appropriate access point, but access is still controlled by security mechanisms such as passwords, authentication protocols, and encryption.

That said, most routers ship with default SSIDs set by the manufacturer names like “TP-Link”, or “NETGEAR”. Because these defaults are widely known, security best practices strongly recommend changing the SSID to a unique name before deployment.

Example: Instead of leaving the SSID as “TP-Link_2345”, rename it to something neutral like “one piece”. Avoid using personal information such as your name or address.

SSID Broadcasting and Beacon Frames

Wireless access points advertise their presence using beacon frames. These are special transmissions that announce the network name and capabilities, allowing nearby devices to easily discover and connect to available WiFi networks.

By default, SSIDs are broadcast so that users can see the network in their list of available connections. Many routers allow administrators to disable SSID broadcasting in an attempt to “hide” the network.At first glance, this might seem like a smart security move but it’s not.

Why Hiding the SSID Is Not Real Security

Even if SSID broadcasting is disabled, the SSID is still included in wireless communications between connected clients and the access point. An attacker using a wireless packet sniffer can easily capture this traffic and discover the network name.

Example: A hidden network named “SecureOffice” won’t appear in a phone’s Wi-Fi list, but an attacker running tools like Wireshark can still detect the SSID within seconds.

Because of this, disabling SSID broadcasting provides no meaningful security benefit and should not be relied upon as a protection mechanism.

The Right Way to Secure a Wireless Network

Instead of trying to hide the network’s existence, focus on strong authentication and encryption. Modern security standards such as WPA2 and WPA3 are designed to protect wireless communications effectively.

Best practices include:

Use WPA3 (or WPA2 if WPA3 is unavailable)

Set a strong, complex passphrase

Change default SSIDs and administrator credentials

keep router firmware up to date

These measures ensure that even if the SSID is visible which it should be unauthorized users cannot gain access.
