Design, Accessibility, and My Journey — Beginning

I’m Gennadiy Oleynik, a UX/UI designer, a bit of a tech geek, and a relentless pursuer of the ‘wow’ factor in design. With 5+ years of dipping my toes (and often diving headfirst) into the vast ocean of design and development, I’ve come to realize that every pixel, every line of code holds a story, a potential to amaze.

A Tale of an Unexpected Inspiration

Rewind a few years, and there I was, a designer armed with skills ranging from crafting intricate UI kits to animating websites. But it was one incident that pivoted my design philosophy forever.

I remember working on a website design for a local art gallery. It was sleek, modern, and I dare say, quite stunning. Then, I received an email from a user who was visually impaired. They appreciated the design, but couldn’t enjoy it fully due to accessibility issues. That email was a wake-up call. It made me realize that design is not just about aesthetics, it’s about creating experiences that everyone can appreciate, regardless of their abilities.

My Approach to Accessible Design

From that moment, my design ethos transformed. Now, whether I’m wireframing for a new app or creating clickable prototypes in Figma, I always keep accessibility at the forefront.

Embracing Color and Contrast

In the world of UX, color isn’t just an aesthetic choice; it’s a functional tool. I’ve learned to balance color psychology with high contrast ratios, ensuring that my designs are not only visually appealing but also legible to those with visual impairments.

Typography That Talks

Typography in my designs is more than just pretty fonts; it’s about readability and ease. Choosing fonts that are friendly to dyslexic users, or ensuring that text sizes are adjustable, has become a part of my design checklist.

Navigational Nirvana

Remember my love for creating user flows and journeys? That’s where I ensure the paths are not just intuitive but also navigable via keyboard. This consideration is a game-changer for users with motor impairments.

My Toolkit: Blending Art with Technology

My journey has also been about mastering the tools of the trade. Figma, Adobe XD, Photoshop, and Illustrator are my brushes and palettes. At the same time, front-end frameworks like React.js and Node.js are the canvases where my designs come to life. And let’s not forget WordPress, where I sculpt user experiences with plugins like WooCommerce and Elementor.

As I continue to explore the intersections of UX/UI design, graphic design, and motion design, my goal remains steadfast: to create designs that astonish and are astonishingly accessible.
