My Darling Bud of May

A Tale of Love and Illusion

I knew that she was someone that I shouldn’t touch. A person who was toxic in her own way. My friends even warned me not to get too close, as she would be rough on my soul, my heart, and my desires.

As the light fell across the sky, I watched her in the twilight; her hair glowed auburn, and I was intoxicated by her. The whiteness of her skin, her laugh and smile –I thought I could see her soul.

Her sunlight shone eternally,

My heart is charmed by her, but it knows it is a foolish notion.

Words catch in my mouth as we look at each other. I long for her touch, to embrace her in my arms, yet I am powerless to speak my mind.

Time is running out. There are others who see what I do and want her to be theirs. I think that my love is greater, more true than anything they could dream about. Just one moment would satisfy me.

I know that beauty fades through time, but it is the love that we share that will make it eternal.

Rough winds shake my darling bud of May, Like Summer, her countenance has too short a date.

Together, I think we can make it in this world of harsh words and awkward angles. For it will be love that binds us together. Entwining our immortal coils around each other for eternity.

I am a man, and I step into the last ray of sunlight that makes a halo behind her. She looks like an angel. I feel blessed as she hears my voice and smiles.

Finding love is difficult in this modern age, but sometimes the universe smiles down on us and gives us that miracle.

A jolt goes through me like electricity surging through my neurons as we hold hands. The chemicals in my brain react, and endorphins flow. I’m addicted immediately, craving her lips.

She is my sun, my moon, my starlit sky, without her, I dwell in darkness. Her power has enchanted me, and I stand helpless against it.

May sees through me into my soul. A snake in the garden of Eden, I taste that apple. A crack appears, which tears at my heart. She is merciless, pulling me this way and that. I ask her to stop, to return me to that state when we first met.

Was it all an illusion? A fantasy that I created. Now I am alone. She is gone, finding solace in another’s arms, while I weep alone.

I should have listened to what everyone told me. Some fruits are forbidden to touch for a reason. I sank my teeth in deep and sucked out the poison.

In the light of summer, I thought I was the sun, but I was only a single ray amongst many. Her beauty lingers within me, yet I am forgotten to her.

What have I become but a distant ghost?

A thing of the past.

But all is not lost.

I have one thing.

The memory.

Of my darling, as our love bloomed, in the month of May.

I have used abbreviations from Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 and a quote from the movie Willow. See if you can spot them.
