“Never Rest on Your Rights”: A Warning Echoing Through a Turbulent World

Why a simple phrase from my youth feels more urgent in today’s unstable world.

A Lesson From My Youth in an Uncertain World**

In recent years, I’ve found myself feeling a quiet sense of unease whenever I watch international news. Conflicts appear in the headlines more frequently, and events that once felt exceptional now seem almost routine. The world is not moving steadily toward peace in the way many once hoped.

In Europe, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to reshape the continent’s security landscape. The conflict has lasted far longer than many predicted, and its effects have spread far beyond the battlefield. Energy markets, food supplies, and geopolitical alliances have all been disrupted.

Elsewhere, tensions persist. The Middle East remains caught in cycles of retaliation and political instability. Across parts of Africa and Asia, territorial disputes and regional rivalries remain unresolved. Each conflict has its own history, yet together they create a broader impression: the international order is entering a period of uncertainty.

This atmosphere feels very different from the optimism that followed the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s. Back then, many believed a new era of cooperation and stability had begun. Globalization accelerated, trade expanded, multinational companies grew, and the internet connected people in ways once unimaginable. There was a widespread belief that economic interdependence would reduce the likelihood of war.

But history rarely moves in a straight line. Large-scale wars between superpowers have become less common, yet regional conflicts, proxy wars, and strategic rivalries continue to shape the world. War has not disappeared — it has simply evolved.

As I watch these changes unfold, I often recall a phrase I encountered when I was a middle school student:

“Never rest on your rights.”

It appeared in a Japanese language reference book — just a short line among many others. At the time, I didn’t fully understand it. Yet for some reason, the words stayed with me.

Over the years, the phrase would resurface at unexpected moments — usually when life felt comfortable or secure. When work was going well or circumstances seemed stable, that quiet sentence would return and ask a simple question:

“Is this really the time to relax?”

Human beings naturally seek comfort after achieving something. But stability rarely lasts forever. Societies change, economies shift, and political systems evolve. Even the international order can transform without warning.

Looking back, perhaps many of us — myself included — became too accustomed to the post–Cold War image of the world. Globalization felt unstoppable. Technology advanced rapidly. Cross-border communication became effortless. It was easy to assume these trends would continue indefinitely.

But the past decade has reminded us how fragile global systems truly are. Economic crises, pandemics, political upheavals, and geopolitical tensions have shaken long‑held assumptions. In a sense, the world itself may have begun to “rest on its rights.”

Peace, prosperity, and stability are not permanent achievements. They require continuous effort to maintain. When societies forget this, they risk being caught off guard by sudden change.

Today, governments around the world are rethinking their strategies. Supply chains are being reorganized. Defense policies are being reassessed. Economic security has become a central concern. The era of effortless globalization is fading.

This does not mean globalization will disappear. International cooperation remains essential. But the confidence that once surrounded it has clearly weakened.

And so, the phrase from my youth feels more relevant than ever:

“Never rest on your rights.”

It is not a moral slogan. It is a reminder that stability cannot be taken for granted. Whether in personal life or international politics, progress and security require constant vigilance.

History keeps moving, even when we wish it would stand still. Perhaps the most important task for our generation is to remember this lesson — before complacency leads us into deeper uncertainty.
