Viewfinder — a digital perspective on Gustav Klimt

The Belvedere is pleased to announce a special event in the context of its current exhibition *Gustav Klimt — Pigment & Pixel*, which presents new insights into the working methods of Gustav Klimt based on recent technical and conservational research.

On 4 September 2025, the Belvedere will host a private evening event at the Lower Belvedere, presenting the project Viewfinder — a contemporary artistic response developed by Berlin-based artist Marcel Schwittlick in collaboration with Ancora and based on the museum’s scientific investigations. Viewfinder explores how data derived from Klimt’s paintings — made visible through X-ray, infrared, and ultraviolet imaging — can be translated into a new visual language. The project draws directly on the findings presented in the exhibition Gustav Klimt — Pigment & Pixel, and transforms these materials into an autonomous generative system.

Rather than depicting Klimt’s work, Viewfinder builds upon it, using software and real-time systems to create 900 unique digital works — each continuously evolving, with no repetition or fixed state.
