Strategy is constrained by supply reality

The World Economic Forum has published the Global Value Chains Outlook 2026.
This week I will share three short notes on three themes I pulled out of the report.
Topic 1 of 3: strategy is constrained by supply reality.
Board takeaways (topic-specific):
- Start strategy with constraints, not forecasts. Assume volatility and constraints in routes, critical inputs, and energy, plus less predictability in policy and regulation.
- Execution risk is now strategic risk. Choices on markets, products, and commitments fail if the supply system cannot support them.
- Leadership responsibility is deliverability: stress-test every strategic plan against constraints, pivot time, and decision rights.
Three board questions that force clarity:
- What can stop revenue within 30 days (input, supplier, lane, licence)?
- What is your time to pivot supplier, site, and route, in days?
- Who decides within 48 hours when a trigger hits?
Rule of thumb: if you cannot state pivot time in days, you do not have optionality. You have hope.
