Learning Network Cable Termination: A Hands-On Experience
During my first semester at UCU, I worked on a cable termination practical that helped me understand the fundamentals of networking. The task was to terminate different types of cables, including Straight-through and crossover.
I learned how to prepare Ethernet cables, arrange wire pairs according to standards, and use crimping tools effectively. The most exciting part was testing the wires and seeing them work successfully.
It was a hands-on experience which taught me to prepare, terminate, and test Ethernet cables to industry standards.
Quick step-by-step
-
Measure and cut cable to the desired length.
-
Cut off the outer jacket to reveal 4 twisted pairs.
-
Untwist and lay out — untwist pairs and straighten wire; lay out according to the standard of choice.
-
Trim the wires to a straight and even surface so they fit easily into the RJ45.
-
Insert the wires completely into the RJ45 connector (clip down). Ensure that every wire extends to its full length.
-
Connect the connector with a crimping section.
-
Check the continuity and correct mapping of the pairs with a cable tester.

T568A: White/Green, Green, White/Orange, Blue, White/Blue, Orange, White/Brown, Brown.
T568B: White/Orange, Orange, White/Green, Blue, White/Blue, Green, White/Brown, Brown.
Crossover: End one end T568A and the other end T568B.

Quick tips
Always keep the pairs close to the connector so that they are not too long untwisted; long untwisted lengths decrease performance.
In case of error demonstrated by the tester, recheck wire order and re-crimp.
Lessons learned
The arrangement of wiring is important — a single wire out of place = no connection.
One saves time in testing by being precise in stripping, arranging and crimping.
Good luck on your first cable temination,I hope this helped you.
