The Myth of Being First in Startups

Why doing one thing meaningfully better beats being early

For years I thought startups win by getting there first. The more I build, the more I realize something different. Being first matters far less than doing one thing so well that people genuinely feel the difference.

The Problem With “This Isn’t New”

Our CFO at teko, Joerg Hansen, recently wrote about how often founders hear some version of “This isn’t new” during pitches. That line stayed with me. I am learning the same lesson in real time.

Being new is not the point. Building something that truly works for people is.

What Canva Taught Us About Real Innovation

Canva was not the first design tool. It simply asked a different question, “What if design wasn’t only for designers?” That shift opened the door for millions who had spent years feeling excluded from the creative process. The product did not invent design. It reinvented who could participate.

How We Approach This at teko

We are still early, still building in public, still learning from users every day. We are not the first wealthtech app in Vietnam or Southeast Asia. We focus relentlessly on one thing. Making access to US and global stocks so simple that anyone can begin investing with clarity and confidence.

That is the innovation that matters for us. Not trying to outdo local securities platforms. But removing the friction, confusion, and intimidation that have kept global markets out of reach for most people.

Rethinking What It Means To Innovate

The longer I build, the more I see that innovation is rarely about creating something the world has never seen. It is often about creating something the world finally feels able to use.

That is the question I keep returning to. What is the one thing worth doing better, not first?

Takeaways

  • Being first is optional. Being meaningfully better is not.
  • Innovation is about usability, not novelty.
  • People adopt what empowers them, not what arrives earliest.

I would love to hear your perspective. What do you think matters more for founders today?
