Change Your Outlook — A Small Shift for Big Change
27Mantra Podcast

Ever have one of those days where something small sets off a whole mental spiral? That was me last week. I was headed to a yoga class, looking forward to some much-needed grounding, when my car’s check engine light came on. Cue the frustration.
The car was running rough, and I instantly thought back to this time last year then the same (a faulty coil) popped up. I had just told a friend I’d meet her at class, and now I had to cancel. My windshield had cracked the week before. I wasn’t sure if this repair would be covered under warranty. And before I knew it, my brain was building a whole case for why this car was now a burden. Ever been there?
The truth is, I actually like my car. It’s paid off, comfortable, and low mileage. But when that stress kicks in, my thoughts don’t always align with reality. That’s when I recognized a familiar pattern: panic, annoyance, chaos. And I had a choice to make.
Not a fully conscious one, but what I call a semi-conscious choice. I could keep spiraling or I could choose to pause.
The Power of STOP
One of the tools I’ve been using lately comes from mindfulness teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn. It’s called the STOP method, and it’s incredibly simple but powerful in the moment. Here’s how it works:
S — Stop: Recognize that you’re reacting. Pause whatever you’re doing. This is the moment you regain agency.
T — Take a Breath: Just one deep breath is enough to bring you into the present. It’s a physical reset.
O — Observe: What’s going on inside? Notice your thoughts, your emotions, even your body language. Without judgment.
P — Proceed Mindfully: Now that you’re grounded, choose your next step intentionally. Respond — don’t react.
When I applied this during my car situation, my three mindful steps became:
- Get home safely (the car went into ‘limp mode,’ so I had to keep it under 50 mph).
- Call the dealership and set the appointment.
- Coordinate with my husband for errands the next few days.
Yes, I peeked at trade-in values for fun, but once I learned the repair was covered under warranty, I was back in balance. The next day, my car was ready. No stress, no chaos.
It could have been a total derailment. But because I used the STOP method, it turned into a minor inconvenience.
A Mini Practice to Try
If you’d like to try it yourself, here’s a quick practice you can follow.
First, find a quiet space. Bring to mind a recent moment where you felt reactive or overwhelmed.
Now:
S — Stop. Physically pause. Let your body and mind come to stillness.
T — Take a breath. Inhale deeply… pause… and exhale slowly.
O — Observe. What thoughts or emotions show up? Where in your body do you feel it? No judgment — just curiosity.
P — Proceed mindfully. What is one step forward from here? What’s the next right thing you can do?
Even one small shift in outlook can ripple into your entire day.
Your Perspective Is Power
This is what I mean by a small shift creating big change. When we change our outlook, we change how we move through life. Our nervous system softens. Our choices become clearer. We create space between what’s happening and how we respond.
So the next time you feel the spiral starting, remember — you can STOP. You have the power to pause, breathe, observe, and proceed with intention.

Thanks so much for reading. I’ll be back soon with Part 2 in the Change Your ___ series where we’ll talk about daily rhythms and rituals, and how small routines can help you feel more grounded throughout your day.
In the meantime, stay kind to yourself. Keep breathing. Keep showing up.
