It felt like the future had arrived overnight. And then, almost as quickly, the word disappeared.

Today, there’s zero mainstream coverage of NFTs. The hype cycle burned out. The speculative frenzy collapsed. The media moved on to shinier things, like artificial intelligence. Even the companies that once trumpeted their NFT strategies now avoid the acronym entirely.

• Music Royalties & Real Estate: Fractionalized ownership experiments continue, but they’re described as tokenized assets.

This is what happens when technology matures: it disappears into the background. The media only covers plumbing when it breaks.

The Geek Vocabulary Survives

Developers never stopped building. They just stopped using the word NFT. Inside GitHub repos and Discord channels, they speak in 721s, 1155s, dNFTs (dynamic NFTs), SBTs (soulbound tokens), RWAs (real-world assets).

It’s the same split we’ve seen before:

• The public once said “dot-coms.” Developers said TCP/IP.
• The public now says “apps.” Developers say APIs and SDKs.

This split vocabulary is the clearest sign of maturity — engineers speak in standards, while consumers just enjoy the benefits.

Why Silence Is Good News

The absence of NFT headlines isn’t proof of failure — it’s proof of absorption.

Media thrives on hype and collapse. Once a technology shifts into boring utility, it leaves the headlines and embeds itself in daily life. Consumers don’t need to know the term “NFT” any more than they need to know “TCP/IP.”

But their concert tickets, loyalty points, art provenance, even home deeds will run on NFT standards. The word may die, but the functionality will live everywhere.

The buzzword is gone. The scams are fading into history. But the rails are quietly being laid across industries.
