Be Intentional About Guarding What You Have

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — [Proverbs 4:23 NIV]
Have you ever received something valuable and, after a while, stopped treating it like it was? A new phone that was once kept in a protective case eventually gets tossed onto the bed. A favourite pair of shoes slowly becomes everyday wear. Familiarity has a way of making us careless with what we once treasured.
The same can happen in our walk with God.
The relationship with God that once filled us with awe can slowly become routine. Prayer becomes another item on the checklist. Bible reading becomes something we do out of obligation rather than delight. We begin to rely on yesterday’s encounters instead of pursuing today’s. Without realising it, familiarity begins to replace wonder.
That is why Scripture repeatedly calls us to guard what God has entrusted to us.
We must guard our relationship with God, our passion for Jesus, the gifts and anointing He has placed on our lives, our spiritual sensitivity, and our sense of wonder. These are precious gifts, but they do not remain vibrant by accident. They require intentional stewardship.
So how do we guard what God has given us?
Set boundaries. Protect your time with God. Not every invitation, distraction, or habit deserves access to your spiritual life.
Stay alert. The enemy often attacks subtly. Spiritual drift rarely happens overnight, it happens one compromised decision at a time (1 Peter 5:8).
Invest consistently. Healthy relationships grow through consistent time together. Spend time in prayer, study God’s Word, worship, and fellowship, even when emotions fluctuate.
Avoid comparison. God is writing a unique story with your life. Comparing your journey with someone else’s can rob you of gratitude and cause you to neglect what God is doing in you (Galatians 6:4–5).
One of the saddest moments in Scripture is when Samson “did not know that the Lord had left him” (Judges 16:20). What had once been extraordinary became something he took for granted. May that never be said of us.
Don’t become so familiar with God’s blessings that you stop guarding them. Treasure His presence. Protect your intimacy with Him. Be intentional about nurturing what He has entrusted to you.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the gift of knowing You. Help me never to take Your presence for granted. Teach me to guard my heart, my passion for You, the gifts You have given me, and my sensitivity to Your voice. Give me the discipline to invest in my relationship with You daily and the wisdom to protect what You have entrusted to me. May my love for You remain fresh and wholehearted every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
