I’m going off to Ascot
I’ve not had my “invite” yet
I’ve been watching for the postman
Surely no-one could forget.
But never mind about a ticket
I must be mindful and take care
And be so very careful
About what I am to wear –
A hat — why there’s the old straw boater* I used to wear to school,
Tie a ribbon round it
And I’m sure I’ll look “cool”.
But alas I could not find it,
I looked both high and low,
But could I find that boater,
The answer proved a “No”.
Someone gave it to a farmer
Together with a coat,
He put it on a scarecrow -
It was eaten by a goat.
For a lady to be hatless
At Ascot that’s “no go”
I have an awful feeling that
This year I’ll miss the show.
Not a Christmas rhyme but I wanted to offer something lighter today. This is a reworking of something from my back catalogue. To be read in a “posh” British accent. Royal Ascot is an esteemed horse racing event which takes place at the racecourse in Ascot, Berkshire, England each year over five days in June. Attendees are expected to wear formal attire. Tickets can be bought but attendance in the Royal Enclosure is by invitation only. A nice, clean crisp boater would be acceptable headwear but not an old battered one left over from school days.
- A boater is a type of straw hat — some schools use it as part of their summer school uniform. The style may be a little old-fashioned now but it is not one which has totally fallen out of use.
