One tall patriarch Visible Heard in the large family Directing Mediating With wisdom at the helm His heart showing through actions

The other quiet and tiny in stature Not always physically present A farmer by occupation Firm in his beliefs The support for the daughters Evident in diligent effort To uplift Educate Advocate To ensure stability The freedom to be Encouraging independence

Both impacting my life trajectory

One with the direct influence To question my father’s limiting beliefs The perceived protection That held me back from opportunities The resultant letting go Ensuring the freedom To live my dreams Follow my passions

The other with his unshakeable support Changing the direction of his daughters lives My mother A strong loving role model Of independence The freedom The quiet strength to be the rock For her daughters

Their farsighted vision still causing ripples Across the bloodlines Uplifting Inspiring Allowing So grateful for the blessings of grandfathers!

I grew up in India which is and has been mostly a very patriarchal system. The daughters are usually considered a burden at many levels, to be protected and married very early rather than pursue a career. I know things are changing and have changed somewhat since I was a child. I was very fortunate to have visionary wise grandfathers who quietly and with direct action changed how I am able to live my life. I heard about my mother’s father’s quiet efforts and support for his daughters through the stories my uncles told me. I am blessed to have known my grandfathers and grandmothers — and that is another poem and a story for another time.
