How a 19-Year-Old From Marondera, Zimbabwe Is Building a Global Clothing Brand From Scratch
Most fashion brands start in major cities — Paris, New York, Milan. Mine started in Marondera, Zimbabwe, with no investors, no big studio, and no guarantee it would work.
My name is Ernest Gundo, and I’m the founder of Hailey Jordany, a clothing and lifestyle brand built on one belief:
You don’t need permission to build something global.
This is the story of how I started, what I learned, and how we’re planning to grow beyond Zimbabwe into fashion and even tourism.
Starting With Nothing but an Idea
Hailey Jordany didn’t begin with money or connections. It began with observation.
I noticed something simple:
- People want identity through fashion
- Most local brands copy global trends instead of creating their own
- Young people want something they can connect with emotionally, not just wear
That gap became the foundation.
So I started designing concepts, experimenting with branding, and building the identity of Hailey Jordany from scratch.
The Struggles Behind Building a Brand in Zimbabwe
Building a clothing brand in Zimbabwe comes with real challenges:
- Limited access to manufacturing tools
- High production costs compared to market prices
- Difficulty scaling logistics
- Lack of exposure compared to global brands
But the biggest challenge wasn’t external — it was consistency.
There were moments where nothing seemed to move forward. No sales spikes. No viral moments. Just slow building.
That’s where most brands stop.
What Helped Me Keep Going
The turning point wasn’t funding — it was mindset.
Three things kept the brand alive:
1. Consistency over hype
I stopped chasing fast results and focused on building identity.
2. Branding over products
People don’t just buy clothes — they buy meaning.
3. Long-term thinking
Instead of asking “how do I sell today?”, I started asking “what does this brand become in 5 years?”
Where Hailey Jordany Is Going Next
Hailey Jordany is not just a clothing label. It’s a lifestyle brand with expansion plans into:
- Fashion and streetwear
- Digital branding and media
- Tourism experiences in Zimbabwe
- Cultural storytelling through design
The goal is simple: To build a brand that represents African youth globally.
Advice for Young Entrepreneurs Building Brands
If you’re starting with nothing, here’s what I’ve learned:
- Start before you feel ready
- Don’t wait for validation
- Focus on identity, not just products
- Build slowly, but build consistently
- Your location does not limit your potential
Final Thought
Every global brand once started as an unknown idea in someone’s mind.
Hailey Jordany is still early. Still growing. Still building.
But the goal is not to be famous today — it’s to be undeniable tomorrow.
About the Brand: Hailey Jordany is a clothing and lifestyle brand founded in Marondera, Zimbabwe, focused on modern identity-driven fashion and future expansion into global lifestyle markets.
