Introduction

Hello, folks, this is Ana Chica. The idea for this content came about because I really enjoy testing open-source apps, and also because I’m on a mission to remove (almost) all proprietary-code apps from my phone. I haven’t managed to do it yet, but I’m on the way. Here you’ll find apps I use both to manage my household finances and to organize my physical workouts. Anyway, let’s get to the list.

List of apps

Fossify

This project aims to provide basic apps for your smartphone for free, without tracking. Their products range from a calculator to a camera app (which is in beta). I’ve been using this project’s services for a long time and I have nothing to complain about. They’re lightweight, local, and they let you export your data and do whatever you want with it.

Open Camera

I believe it’s one of the best (if not the best) apps to configure the camera on your Android. It brings some functions that let you get the best out of your device for free.

Oinkoin

This is an app to manage your finances simply and securely. You have no idea how much it saved me — graphs, categories for expenses and income, full control over your data, and all kinds of great features.

Waistline

The app I use to track calories and body changes (weight, body measurements, etc.). Before, I used MyFitnessPal, but I didn’t like the limitation of not being able to enter my data correctly because you can only do that in the Pro version. In Waistline, though, you can change absolutely everything and have control over everything. This app uses the Open Food Facts database and also suggests that you help the project by adding foods that might not be in their database — so do that, because it helps an entire community.

This is a collaborative, free database of food products.

Calisthenics Memory

An app to track your calisthenics workouts, with a focus on privacy in your data. It’s helped me a lot because before I “managed” my workouts in a spreadsheet in Notion, which often made me lose track of my sets. I had to leave Notion to enter rest time, and I couldn’t manage my isometric exercises properly — overall, it was a pain. Now I can train in peace.

Bluemoon

Simple app to manage your menstrual cycle.

MedTimer

Here I manage the schedules and days to take medications when I’m sick.

Brezzy Weather

This project is pretty famous — it’s a forecasting app with tons and tons of features. Seriously, lots of features.

Organic Maps

An offline maps and GPS app that prioritizes privacy.

LocalSend

This saves lives, I mean — wow, it’s super useful. This app is also well known. It lets you share files securely within your local network. It’s a free alternative to Apple’s AirDrop.

FairScan

I haven’t had the chance to use this one yet, but it seems promising. It’s an app for scanning documents, saving them as PDFs, and sharing them simply, quickly, and securely.

YTDlins

Used to download music and videos from YouTube using the yt-dlp project adapted for Android, in a simple and user-friendly interface.

NewPipe

A YouTube frontend for Android.

Syncing with syncthing

In the Oinkoin, Bluemoon, Waistline, and Calisthenics Memory apps, I back up the data and keep the files synced in that system I set up with my passwords, using syncthing and Tailscale. With that, if my phone breaks, I’ll be able to access my finance data very easily from another device.

How to support these projects?

With this content, I also want to remind you that it’s really important to support open-source projects — both by fixing bugs and financially. The way I’m trying to help right now is by spreading the word, starring the repositories on GitHub, and I plan to make monetary donations too — though it’ll be very little, since I’m not a developer.
