Artificial intelligence models are increasingly becoming commoditised, and the next wave of competitive advantage will come from how companies integrate these capabilities to deliver practical outcomes, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said during his visit to India on the Microsoft AI Tour in Mumbai.

“There are many capable models available today. The challenge is bringing them together and creating a seamless, impactful experience,” Nadella explained.

The Microsoft chief highlighted that the future of AI lies in ‘context engineering’ — the ability to ground AI systems in enterprise data, workflows, and human interactions so that AI agents can reason, plan, and act with relevance. “The effectiveness of your AI application depends directly on how well your data is contextualised,” he noted.

Nadella emphasised that AI is moving beyond simple prompt-and-response models toward agentic systems that autonomously perform tasks across multiple applications. “Now we have agents. Think of Copilot as a browser for the agentic web,” he said.

Examples include AI agents acting as always-on research assistants, analysing large datasets or spreadsheets like an entire data science team, and iteratively improving outputs in tools such as Excel. Nadella remarked, “What happened in software development is now coming to Excel, accelerating productivity and transforming how people work.”

This perspective reinforces Microsoft’s vision that AI’s true value emerges when integrated with enterprise workflows, combining human insight with agentic intelligence to drive meaningful outcomes across industries.
