Police Take Down 8Base Ransomware Gang

A joint operation involving the FBI, Europol, NCA, and law enforcement from Europe and Asia successfully dismantled the 8Base ransomware gang. Authorities arrested four Russian nationals linked to the group, which had been active since 2022 and stole $16 million through ransomware attacks.

8Base was known for its dark web portal, where it sold stolen data, and had over 1,000 victims worldwide. The operation, codenamed Phobos Aetor, targeted the gang’s use of Phobos ransomware, which affected 17 major Swiss companies and 1,000 individuals.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) unsealed criminal charges against Roman Berezhnoy and Egor Nikolaevich Glebov, while US and Swiss authorities seek extradition of all four suspects on charges of wire fraud, theft, and cybercrimes.

This takedown coincides with global crackdowns on cybercrime, including sanctions against Zservers, a hosting provider accused of facilitating ransomware attacks.
