The White Lotus 2, A

The season of debauchery.

This season continues along the A/B/C storyline split. The A story focuses on Jennifer Coolidge’s returning character, her wealth and a plot to obtain it. The B story focuses on Aubrey Plaza and Will Sharpe’s marriage problems (parallel to season 1’s C story w/ the newlyweds) that surface due to traveling with Sharpe’s college friend and his wife (Theo James and Meghann Fahy). The C story focuses on an Italian-American family looking for ancestors in Sicily, and their (unbeknownst) love for a couple of sex workers local to the area.

My first sentence is a valid one, with something sex related happening in each episode: cheating on your wife/husband, voyeurism, independent prostitution, forced prostitution, sexual slavery discovering lesbianism, elderly sex, orgies… and if you pay attention to the opening credit sequence, its all hinted in there. This definitely deserves a hard MA rating.

Simona Tabasco, Aubrey Plaza, Jennifer Coolidge lead all of the acting core by-far. Plaza’s dry humor that was perfected on Parks and Recreation is pretty effective here, but unfortunately she had to significantly expose herself for some self-deprecating black humor. Jennifer Coolidge’s crazy woman act is intensified, with additional alcoholism and substance abuse where she feigns mental clarity when something threatens her. Something similar appears with mental and Alzheimer’s patients. Simona Tabasco appears to be an immoral proxy for the everyman because even as a prostitute because her and her partner (Beatrice Grannò) are the only ones grounded in reality, sheltered from wealth.

Overall I enjoyed this season more than the previous one, the ending is fucking satisfying and unexpected. So I’m not going into spoilers, but if you watch/binge this show, you’ll be satisfied.
