If you’ve ever been in a meeting where the highest-paid person in the room gets the final say, you might be familiar with the HiPPO effect. It’s a phenomenon where organizations rely heavily on the opinions of their senior leaders, even when those opinions might not be the best for the situation at hand. And it can really hurt your decision-making process.
The HiPPO effect can be detrimental to an organization’s decision-making process, as it can lead to the suppression of new ideas and the reluctance of team members to challenge the status quo. In other words, the HiPPO effect can stifle innovation and creativity, leading to a culture of conformity and a lack of critical thinking.
Research shows that the HiPPO effect can lead to poor decisions, especially when the senior leader’s expertise isn’t directly relevant to the decision. Plus, group dynamics can make it worse, with team members conforming to the HiPPO’s opinion instead of speaking up with their own ideas.
The HiPPO effect is particularly prevalent in hierarchical organizations, where a clear chain of command and decision-making authority is concentrated at the top. In these types of organizations, decisions are often made based on the opinions and preferences of senior leaders rather than on objective data or analysis.
This can lead to several problems, including:
Stifling innovation
When decisions are made based on the HiPPO’s opinion, it can be difficult for new ideas or approaches to gain traction. This can lead to a lack of innovation within the organization, as new ideas are rejected in favor of the HiPPO’s established way of doing things.
Reduced diversity of thought
The HiPPO effect can also limit the diversity of thought within an organization. When a single individual or group dominates decision-making, there is a risk that alternative perspectives or ideas will not be considered. This can lead to a narrow-minded approach to problem-solving, which may only consider the needs or perspectives of some stakeholders.
Missed opportunities
Relying on the HiPPO’s opinion can also result in missed opportunities. When decisions are made based on subjective opinions rather than objective data, there is a risk that the organization will miss out on potential opportunities or fail to respond to emerging trends or market shifts.
The problem with relying on HiPPOs is that they often have blind spots in areas where they lack expertise, and their opinions may not be based on the most up-to-date information or data.
But don’t despair! There are ways to overcome the HiPPO effect and make better decisions.
Here are five strategies you could try that I have found helpful:
Prioritize data over opinions
Make sure decisions are based on objective analysis instead of subjective views. It’s crucial to rely on data-driven decision-making to ensure that you’re making the right choices, which requires some effort on your side. Never go to a meeting with a HiPPO without data on your side. If the choice is between your opinion and the HiPPOs, they will always win — every single time !!
Build Consensus — before the meeting.
Before you go to such a meeting, you need to build allies that understand your version of the story and your version of the insights that the data shows. Every second in the forum spent convincing someone else about your perspective is a disaster because, during that time, the HiPPO has already made up their mind that your story is not as good as theirs. If you know that you will come under a HiPPO attack, you need to ensure all your energies are focused on taking on that one opponent.
Design Experiments
Be willing to try new ideas and take calculated risks. Do not be afraid even if they go against the HiPPO’s established views. HiPPOs are not bad people (I mean, yeah, most of the time !). If you really make a good point and manage to convince them, you can actually turn the ship around. Go armed with experiments that you can try to take your idea forward. Push them to agree to let you experiment. Keep them short and simple. Learn iteratively and incrementally. HiPPOs are often more likely to let you experiment with an idea than accept it fully. As the experiment bears results, they may eventually warm up to your big radical shiny idea.
Stick your neck out
Question assumptions and ask critical questions, even if it means going against the HiPPO’s opinion. Do it in a politically correct and diplomatic way. Ask powerful questions that can help to ensure that any HiPPO unilateral decisions are thoroughly evaluated and scrutinized before the group agrees.
The Wrap
Next time you find yourself in a meeting with a HiPPO, don’t be afraid to challenge them maturely and armed with data. Remember, the HiPPO effect can be detrimental to decision-making and hinder progress, so it’s essential to work towards breaking this cycle. By prioritizing a culture of collaboration and inclusivity, you can build a more resilient organization that’s ready to tackle any challenge that comes your way.
