If asked about medical tourism several decades ago, people would say that the whole idea of travelling to another country for medical purposes was quite impossible. Nowadays, millions of people around the world use this service.

Every year, millions of patients go abroad for treatment.

This phenomenon is known as medical tourism.

Each medical tour has its own story. It might be the story of a father looking for a cheap heart surgery, a patient diagnosed with cancer trying to find his treatment, or a young couple who travelled to another country to give birth.

These stories illustrate that this type of tourism is rather personal and often means second chances for people.

One may think that medical tourism is a quite simple concept: patients travel to other countries to get treatment there. This assumption is partially correct.

Indeed, affordability is the most obvious reason why people prefer going to other countries for treatment. In some countries, major operations can cost several times more than in others, which makes treatment abroad rather appealing.

Nevertheless, the reasons behind the decision to travel might be more complex.

Some patients choose to undergo treatment abroad because they cannot wait for it in their home country. Other patients look for more advanced technologies, qualified specialists, new treatment techniques, etc.

In recent decades, India, Thailand, Singapore, Turkey and Malaysia were recognised as the most popular destinations for medical tours.

However, one should understand that medical tourism includes much more than visiting clinics and getting the treatment.

Patients should take care of visas, flights, hotels and transportation. People who travel abroad for the purpose of treatment do not usually travel alone.

They are accompanied by their friends or relatives who provide them with necessary moral support during periods of stress.

Healthcare and hospitality are closely intertwined in medical tourism.

Apart from excellent medical services, patients require additional care and support. In addition to medical attention, people need compassion, communication and cultural knowledge.

A welcoming atmosphere at the airport, help in navigating through an unfamiliar town or translation into a native language can make the process much more comfortable.

India became one of the leaders in medical tourism because it has excellent healthcare facilities, experienced medical specialists, and affordable prices on the treatment. Moreover, the majority of doctors in India got their education abroad and speak English fluently.

It means that people all around the world feel at home when they arrive in India and can get the necessary treatment at rather low prices.

The growth of medical tourism is also expected to continue with the development of telemedicine and better connections in the world.

However, medical tourism is not about travel.

It is about people.

It is about people who decide to leave their homes for better treatment.

Medical tourism is not just a healthcare industry.

It is a human story.

Every medical journey carries a story of hope. If you found value in this article, share it and continue the conversation.
