Cricket in Minutes: Downfall of the Mighty Punjab Kings

The Rise of PBKS

During the start of IPL 2026, everyone was stunned by the performance of one team — Punjab Kings. We witnessed their hunger for winning the trophy after losing IPL 2025 to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a nail-biting final. Winning 6 matches in a row in a cash-rich, highly competitive league is not everyone’s cup of tea. At one point, every other team, in fact the whole of India, looked up to this team. They made the highest run chase of the IPL 2026 league stage, chasing 264 against DC with 7 balls left.

The Momentum break

But then things took an unexpected turn. With their first loss coming against RR, PBKS started to continuously lose matches, putting an end to their winning streak. At that point, another unexpected streak began — the losing streak. Following their loss to Rajasthan Royals, they faced disappointment against GT, SRH, DC, MI, and RCB. The team that once had a 6-match winning streak now had a 6-match losing streak, making their playoff dreams weak after the RCB match.

Playoff Dreams

Following CSK’s loss to SRH at the Chepauk Stadium and RR’s loss against DC, there was still a small ray of hope alive. During PBKS’s last match against LSG, LSG posted a total of 196. During the second innings, after the loss of 2 early wickets, hopes started getting crushed. But then, a partnership was built between the skipper himself and Prabhsimran Singh, which shifted the momentum of the match. During the 17.6th over, with 3 needed from 1 ball, we witnessed a six from “Sarpanch Saab.” With that came Punjab’s victory and Shreyas Iyer’s maiden hundred, which kept their playoff dreams alive.

The next day, in the match between MI and RR, PBKS fans were rooting for MI’s victory. RR posted a monstrous total of 205 at Wankhede. MI started losing early wickets, but later a partnership between Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya made the fans believe they were still in the game. However, with the wicket of Hardik, the dreams of not only MI fans but also the playoff hopes of PBKS and KKR fans were crushed. PBKS’ campaign ended there.

Where Momentum Shifted

Despite the solid winning momentum in the initial stages, several things could have gone wrong:

First, the team was heavily dependent on the top order. The top order served as the backbone of the team. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh provided steady starts, Cooper Connolly and Shreyas Iyer carried the momentum, and finally Shashank and Stoinis finished things off.

The second reason was the bowling. The bowling lineup was not stable, and there was heavy dependency on key bowlers such as Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal. Once they failed to deliver, the batting side took advantage.

Third was the issue of multiple home venues. PBKS played their initial home games at the PCA Stadium and later shifted to the HPCA Stadium.

Positives Despite the Fall

Despite all this, we still witnessed many bright positives — Shreyas Iyer emerging as a potential captaincy candidate for the Indian team, and Priyansh Arya along with Prabhsimran Singh taking charge of the batting despite being uncapped players, even under high-pressure situations. In future seasons, we can hope to see more quality cricket from Punjab Kings.
