A Good Man is Hard to Find, Created in Adobe Photoshop

‘A’ good man is hard to find’ is not merely a common saying, or a literary echo borrowed to use, it is an experience. In a world where people are proclaiming goodness but performing it quietly, goodness has become hard to find, usually jumbled with performance, politeness, or popularity. We glorify benevolence in words and celebrate cruelty in institutions. Our integrity is a virtue that we praise, and when it is time to pay it with some comfort, we avoid it.

It is no recollection of the old, or preaching of the new; it is a question. What is the meaning of good man in the contemporary world? Why is goodness so rare and so delicate, even inconvenient? But above all is the issue whether it is the lack of good men, or the shifting of the meaning of what it takes to be good?

The Problem with the Word “Good”

There is inflation of the word good. It is applied too frequently, too lightly, over the actions that are simply acceptable or non-injurious. An excellent man has become a man who does not outrage, who works within the law when supervised, who is on the right side at the right moment. But goodness, in its purest sense, has never been passive.

And the lack of harm is not it, the responsibility is. It requires ethical strength, but not popularity. Goodness is softened into manners or a superficial decency, and becomes as vulgar as a bare backbone of a man brought up on these definitions develops into a polite, rather than a principled man.

Character vs. Performance

In the contemporary world, performance is rewarded. Social media, corporate cultures, and even personal relationships tend to appreciate the appearance of something rather than its cost internally. When nobody is around, a man may seem to be good -articulate, empathetic, progressive -yet at the same time undermining his principles.

Authenticity is, however, out of stage. It manifests itself in uncharted situations: the management of power, the discharge of promises, the utilization of silence. A good man is not a consistent one, as he is perceived, but as such inconsistency would be a stumbling block to his own identity.

Why Goodness Feels Inconvenient

Goodness demands friction. It kills ambition, and it makes decisions harder, and it usually beckons loss. A good man needs to say no when yes would help him, speak when not speaking would save his cause, and stand by himself when everybody flows in the other way.

Goodness is burdensome in a world where people are expected to be quick, take shortcuts, and be continually validated. It does not optimize well. It does not trend. And another multitude of men, not necessarily wicked, opt convenience instead of conscience not once, but again and again and again and again and again and IMPLIED and IMPLIED — until the gap becomes customary.

The Crisis of Moral Masculinity

Masculinity as such is negotiable. Conventional paradigms — based on authority and emotional repression — have been made to stand the test of time. Yet what takes their place is not very clear. Several men are presently swinging between poles: acting-like sensitivity with no responsibility, or just unbending hardness with no compassion.

Goodness requires balance. It demands power that will save us, not frighten us, and discipline that will not sink into infirmity, and responsibility which will not couch behind pretexts. A good man is not loud or invisible; he is there, accountable and rooted.

Integrity in Private Life

The most genuine epitome of goodness is personal life. The way a man behaves with those who are unable to provide him with status, leverage, or praise speaks more than anything that would ever happen in public. The results of a man are received by his family, partners, friends, and even strangers.

A good man does not project his morality to institutions, religion and ideology in isolation. He interrogates himself. He repairs when he harms. He does not use his injuries as an excuse to be cruel. Good is not perfection -it is correction.

The Role of Choice, Not Nature

Good men are not made; they are selected into being in this world every day. Goodness is not a character but an exercise. It is constructed out of recurrent choices — usually small, usually unknown — that build an identity with time. People should not be absolved of responsibility by the myth that people are good or bad.

The truth is that the vast majority of men live in the grey and are dragged by fear, desire, and social pressure. A good man is different, but not in his purity, but in his commitment: the unwillingness to relinquish the better, after it has failed.

Why Society Struggles to Recognize Good Men

The problem with good men is that they are the ones who are so easily ignored. They do not promote their morals, make a spectacle out of their sacrifices, and turn morality into branding. They are not dramatic but are consistent. Goodness may be considered dull in a society that is obsessed with extremes.

However, this is the very stability that maintains community, relationships and trust. This makes good men silent actors in a society where the rewards of visibility and not virtue are given -they are more missed than glorified.

Becoming, Not Finding

Maybe the very wording is deceptive. A good man is not easily found, since he is occasionally found; he is not easily found, since good is hard to maintain. It involves self-introspection in a globalized society that thrives on distraction, confidence in frameworks that encourage conformity and tolerance in cultures that are obsessed with instant gratification.

That changes, the question then becomes not where are the good men? but What are the conditions of possibility of good, and to whom is it possible to be a life?

A good man is a rare thing to come by since he is not easy to find. He lives in a place of accountability and moderation, bravery and sympathy, resilience and self-recognition. He is not flawless, not complete, not unanimously praised, but is consistent.

In a generation when one has to be photographed, the good man is unobtrusively subversive. And perhaps the only difficulty is not finding such men, but making choices, — personally and as a group — whether or not we want to value goodness so much as to practice it, to guard it, and to live by it, even when no one is present.
