Libertarian Revolution: Azize’s Fight in the Heart of Rojava

In a tense and critical context, following the Syrian government’s attack on January 20, 2026, I have the opportunity to interview a libertarian fighter from Rojava, who prefers to remain anonymous and goes by the name of Azize. Her vision encompasses not just the freedom of the Kurdish people, but also a strong commitment to matriarchy and libertarian principles.

How you joined the resistance forces and what these recent fights mean to you?

Hey, thanks for having me. I’ll respond a bit more generally. After the attack on January 20, our determination has only grown. My choice to join the fight comes from my belief that not only does the Kurdish people deserve freedom, but we also need to build a society based on anarchist and matriarchal principles. Individual freedom is key to opposing oppression.

What anarchist and matriarchal values inspired your struggle?

Values like self-management and solidarity are at the core of my vision. I believe in a society where decisions are made collectively, and where women can take on leadership roles without any discrimination. For me, matriarchy represents not just the liberation of women, but also a community model where care and cooperation are essential.

How do these principles manifest in daily life in Rojava, especially during such a critical time?

Despite the challenges, local assemblies allow us to practice direct democracy. Every voice matters, and it’s right now, during the struggle, that we need to reaffirm our vision of equality. We’re proving that it’s possible to build a fair community even in the midst of conflict.

What role does the matriarchy play in your vision of resistance?

It’s crucial. The liberation of women is intertwined with the liberation of everyone. In this conflict, matriarchy offers us a fresh perspective: a society where women are not just fighters, but also leaders and decision-makers. This shift in thinking is essential for tackling oppression.

What challenges do you face in this environment?

Besides the direct attacks from government forces, we have to fight against stereotypes and prejudices. The silence of the outside world is another challenge; many people don’t see our commitment to freedom through the right lens. But every day, we’re fighting to show that our model of society is possible.

And what are your dreams for the future of Rojava?

I dream of a Rojava that embraces matriarchy and libertarian values, where every individual is free to express themselves and contribute. We want a society that celebrates diversity. Our current resistance will lay the groundwork for a just and inclusive future.
