How to Keep the Lamp of Your Soul Burning

A devotional meditation inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ

My child, if you desire that the lamp of your soul burn brightly, do not concern yourself first with the flame. Attend instead to the oil.

For no lamp continues to shine when its vessel is empty.

The lamp of the soul burns through living communion with God. It is sustained not by occasional enthusiasm but by daily faithfulness. Many seek the fire while neglecting the oil. They desire spiritual strength, yet they do not pray. They desire wisdom, yet they do not seek truth. They desire peace, yet they cling to the things that rob them of peace.

Keep watch over your heart.

A lamp grows dim when bitterness enters. It flickers when pride is nourished. It weakens when the soul becomes distracted by the cares of the world and forgets the things of Heaven.

Therefore forgive quickly.

Release resentment before it hardens within you.

Guard your thoughts, for thoughts become words, words become actions, and actions shape the path upon which you walk.

Fill your vessel daily.

Let prayer be the breath of your spirit. Speak to the Father not only in times of need, but also in gratitude and reverence. The soul that remains connected to God receives fresh strength as a branch receives life from the vine.

Meditate upon truth.

The lamp is fed by truth and weakened by deception. Therefore seek what is noble, pure, righteous, and good. Do not delight in darkness and then wonder why your light diminishes.

Walk in obedience.

A lamp burns brightest when the heart responds quickly to conviction. When truth is revealed, act upon it. Delayed obedience weakens spiritual clarity. The more faithfully you walk in the light you have been given, the more light will be entrusted to you.

Serve others.

Love is fuel for the soul. Acts of kindness, mercy, compassion, and generosity keep the heart soft and receptive to God. A lamp was not made to illuminate itself but to bring light to others.

Remain watchful.

As the wise virgins kept oil in their lamps, so keep your spirit prepared. Do not assume that yesterday’s devotion is sufficient for today. Seek fresh oil. Seek fresh fellowship with God. Seek fresh renewal of heart.

And when storms arise, protect the flame.

Do not allow fear to extinguish trust.

Do not allow doubt to overcome faith.

Do not allow the noise of the world to drown out the still voice of God.

For the lamp that is continually supplied with oil will not fail in the night.

Blessed is the soul whose lamp burns steadily before God, whose heart remains awake, whose faith remains living, and whose eyes remain fixed upon the Eternal.

Such a lamp shines not by its own power, but by the life of God flowing through it. And its light will guide the traveler safely until the dawn appears.
