Why Bright Kids Choose Science: Notes from a Former Rebel in Social Studies

A friend asked me recently if I’d always been good at the humanities. It was a fair question — the kind that catches you off guard precisely because it misses the point entirely. I’ve been writing a string of essays on geography: spice routes that rewired global power, the Korean map of the world in 1402, the “innovation latitude belt” that somehow made parallel lines on a map the secret ingredient to human progress. To him, this sounded like the natural output of someone who spent high school swooning over Herodotus and scribbling passionate defences of the social contract.

I laughed. “No,” I told him. “I took science streaming in high school.”

His face did that particular gymnastics routine people perform when their mental model of you suddenly requires an emergency rebuild. But here’s the thing: that answer surprised even me as I said it. Because looking back now, it’s not that I didn’t care about history or society or the grand theatre of human folly. It’s that I couldn’t breathe in how they were taught.

The Classroom Where Questions Were a Felony

In Indonesia, the social studies classroom was not a place for inquiry. It was a place for obedience — a secular seminary where the catechism happened to involve memorising the Five Principles of Pancasila instead of the Ten Commandments, but the underlying message was identical: don’t ask, just believe.

I remember once asking my teacher why the parliament structure favoured Golkar — the ruling party that had been ruling so long it had practically merged with the furniture. The question wasn’t even particularly radical; it was just arithmetic. If democracy means representing people proportionally, why were the numbers so… unproportional? It was the kind of observation a calculator could make.

Her face froze in that specific way that signals you’ve just crossed an invisible tripwire. She told me I was being “disrespectful.” Not wrong, mind you. Disrespectful. Which is how you know you’re not in a learning environment anymore — you’re in a loyalty test.

Another time, during a civics lesson that was supposed to teach us about political philosophy, I asked whether we could read Das Kapital by Karl Marx. I’d heard it was banned, which naturally made me more curious — because if you want to make teenagers obsessed with something, the most efficient method ever invented is to forbid it. The next day, I was summoned to the discipline office like I’d been caught running an underground cell instead of asking about a book. The message was crystalline: curiosity was subversion. Questions were sedition. Thinking was suspicious activity.

So I learned to stay quiet in humanities classes. I perfected the art o looking engaged while mentally being anywhere else — calculating orbital mechanics, rearranging molecular structures, anything that didn’t require me to pretend the Emperor’s new parliament was beautifully dressed.

Where Freedom Lived (in an Equation)

I could challenge Newton and still get an A. I could argue that his third law was formulated too absolutely, that action and reaction might get philosophically fuzzy at quantum scales, and my teacher would engage with it. I once spent an entire week arguing with my physics teacher about the Mpemba effect — that strange, counterintuitive phenomenon where hot water can freeze faster than cold water, which sounds like nature is just messing with us for entertainment.

He didn’t punish me. He didn’t call me disrespectful. He leaned forward with this glint in his eye and said, “Interesting. Prove it.”

Three words that changed everything.

That moment stuck with me like a burr on a sweater. Science, for all its equations and rigidity, for all its reputation as the domain of cold logic and clinical detachment, gave me something the humanities never did — freedom. The freedom to be wrong in pursuit of being right. The freedom to question everything, as long as you questioned it methodically.

In science, you were allowed to be wrong, as long as you were rigorous. In social studies, you could only be right — as long as you agreed with the answer key written by people who’d stopped asking questions decades ago.

Newton could be challenged because Newton was dead and had no political connections. Golkar could not be challenged because Golkar was very much alive and held the keys to my teacher’s continued employment.

It wasn’t really about science versus humanities at all. It was about intellectual freedom versus intellectual house arrest.

The Irony of Growing Older

Decades later, in a plot twist that would make O. Henry proud, I find myself returning to the very subjects I fled.

Now I spend nights reading about geography, culture, power dynamics, and the intricate dance of civilisations — the same intersections that bored me to tears as a teenager, though “bored” isn’t quite right. You can’t be bored by something that frightens you, and that’s what those classes actually were: frightening. Not intellectually stimulating enough to engage with, but politically dangerous enough to avoid.

And I wonder: why did so many of us, the so-called “bright kids,” choose science? Why did every classroom of genuinely curious students end up sorted like Hogwarts houses, with all the questioners and sceptics ending up in the laboratories?

Was it because we loved numbers? Perhaps some did. Was it because science jobs pay better? Sure, eventually. But I think it was something more primal: numbers couldn’t punish us.

A miscalculated integral might mark your homework red, but it wouldn’t mark you as politically suspect. A failed chemistry experiment might cost you a grade, but it wouldn’t cost you your future. The titration doesn’t care about your ideology. The Krebs cycle is not watching who you associate with.

In many countries — Indonesia, Japan, China, Russia, and let’s be honest, plenty of others who’d bristle at being lumped together — the humanities have long been taught as instruments of ideology rather than investigation. History becomes selective memory, carefully curated like a museum that only displays the flattering portraits. Civics becomes loyalty training, a rehearsal for enthusiastic applause at exactly the right moments. Geography becomes a lesson in why our borders are obviously correct and theirs are obviously suspicious. The curriculum doesn’t reward curiosity; it rewards conformity. It doesn’t produce thinkers; it produces echo chambers with legs.

So the smartest kids, the ones cursed with an overactive “why” reflex, run to the only refuge where “why” isn’t dangerous: science. Where asking “but how do we know?” is the whole point rather than an act of teenage rebellion.

The Great Intellectual Migration

It’s funny how these things work. When I started reading *Guns, Germs, and Steel*, I naturally assumed Jared Diamond must have been a historian — someone who spent his youth buried in archives, cross-referencing Mesopotamian tax records for fun.

Turns out, he was a physiologist. A biologist by training. Someone who started his career studying gallbladders in birds.

This is not an isolated case. It’s almost a pattern, a well-worn intellectual migration route. People who were trained to dissect cells end up dissecting civilisations. Scientists who spent their twenties pipetting reagents spend their fifties analysing the fall of empires. E.O. Wilson went from ants to arguing about human nature. Steven Pinker studied psycholinguistics before writing about violence and progress. Even Yuval Noah Harari, while technically a historian, thinks like someone running a massive evolutionary simulation.

Maybe it’s because they were taught early on to see the world as a system — to ask for evidence, to test hypotheses, to accept that your beautiful theory might be murdered by ugly facts. And when they turn that forensic mindset toward society, what emerges isn’t ideology, but insight. Not propaganda, but patterns.

That made me wonder: what kind of thinkers might we have had if the humanities, too, were taught with that same spirit of fearless inquiry? What if fourteen-year-olds learned to question historical narratives the way they question whether a hypothesis survives peer review? What if civics class felt less like catechism and more like debugging code — where finding errors isn’t punishment, it’s progress?

What intellectual Renaissance might we have missed because the brightest minds were too busy seeking asylum in the periodic table?

Lessons from Elsewhere

I later learned, with a mix of relief and rage, that not all countries teach humanities this way.

In Finland, for instance, history isn’t memorised — it’s debated. Students analyse primary sources, question narratives, compare competing accounts, and learn that truth in the humanities is negotiated through evidence and argument, not dictated from a textbook written by a committee that reports to another committee.

In those systems, bright students don’t see science and humanities as opposites — safe versus dangerous, free versus fenced. They see them as complementary ways of understanding the same endlessly fascinating world. They don’t have to choose between intellectual honesty and intellectual safety because both are available simultaneously. Imagine that.

It’s like discovering that all this time, you thought vegetables tasted bad because vegetables ARE bad, but actually, you just had a terrible cook. And somewhere else, people are eating the same vegetables and genuinely enjoying them. The betrayal is exquisite.

Freedom as the Real Curriculum

So, why do bright kids choose science?

Not because we’re naturally better at math, though some of us are. Not because we lack the verbal gifts for humanities — clearly, given this essay, we can manage a sentence or two. Not even because science careers pay better, though parents certainly invoke that argument liberally.

We choose science because science feels safe for curiosity. Because in too many places, the humanities are fenced off by ideology, patrolled by the guardians of acceptable thought, mined with questions you shouldn’t ask.

It’s not about prestige or status or future earning potential — those rationalisations came later, gift-wrapped by anxious parents and guidance counsellors. At fourteen, you’re not optimising for retirement plans. You’re optimising for survival. And intellectual survival means finding a place where asking questions doesn’t mark you as dangerous.

The real curriculum we were learning had nothing to do with what was written in the course catalogue. We were learning where curiosity was allowed and where it was a liability. Where thinking was encouraged, and where it was evidence against you. Where you could be wrong in interesting ways versus where you had to be right in boring ones.

And maybe, that’s the deepest irony of growing older. The same curiosity that drove me to physics — the hunger to understand how things work, to pull apart systems and see their gears — now draws me to history, to social dynamics, to the grand experiment of human civilisation. The difference is, I no longer need permission to ask dangerous questions. I no longer need a teacher to tell me it’s okay to wonder whether the official story holds up to scrutiny.

Age has its privileges, and one of them is that they can’t send you to the discipline office anymore.

Epilogue: Coming Full Circle

Sometimes I think back to that teacher who scolded me for asking about Golkar. I wish I could find her now and say: I still care about fairness. I still care about why power structures favour some people over others. I still want to understand how societies decide who gets a voice and who gets silenced.

I just found different equations to study it with. Ones that won’t get me called to the principal’s office.

But here’s the thing I’ve learned since then, the twist that makes this whole story more complicated and more interesting: science wasn’t always the sanctuary I found it to be.

There was a time — not that long ago in the grand scheme of human stubbornness — when asking questions about the natural world could get you a one-way ticket to a bonfire, starring role included. Galileo didn’t get house arrest for being bad at math. Giordano Bruno wasn’t burned at the stake for failing to show his work. They were punished for having the audacity to look at the sky and report what they actually saw instead of what the approved textbook said they should see.

The Dark Ages weren’t dark because people forgot how to light candles. They were dark because curiosity itself became heretical. Science, back then, wasn’t independent — it was on a very short leash held by people who’d decided they already knew everything worth knowing, thank you very much, and further questions were just inconvenient challenges to divine order.

So what changed? How did science become the rebel’s refuge instead of the rebel’s pyre?

Someone fought for it. Many someones, actually. Over centuries. They insisted, sometimes at great personal cost, that empirical observation couldn’t be heresy. That facts about the physical world weren’t subject to ideological approval. That if your theology couldn’t survive a telescope, maybe the problem was your theology, not the telescope.

They made science safe for curiosity by refusing to let anyone else define what questions were dangerous.

And that’s what makes me wonder: what if we did the same for the humanities? What if we fought just as hard to make history, civics, and social studies into spaces where inquiry couldn’t be labelled as subversion? Where asking about power structures was considered foundational to the subject, not a threat to the teacher’s job security?

Maybe bright kids don’t really “choose” science at all. Maybe we’re just trying to find, somewhere in the curriculum, a place where thinking is still allowed. Where curiosity isn’t coded as subversion. Where “why” is the beginning of learning, not the end of your academic career.

And if that place happens to involve pipettes and Bunsen burners instead of primary sources and parliamentary systems, so be it. We’ll take our intellectual freedom where we can find it.

The beautiful thing is, once you learn how to think — how to question, how to demand evidence, how to hold ideas up to the light and check for cracks — you can apply it anywhere. Even to the subjects you once fled.

Especially to those subjects.

Because they’re the ones that need it most. They’re the ones still waiting for their Galileo moment, their scientific revolution, their liberation from the assumption that some questions are too dangerous to ask.

Science got free. The humanities can too.

But someone has to fight for it. And I suspect it won’t be the people who benefit from keeping the questions forbidden.
